Supplements for bloating that actually work?

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 15/06/2025 20:11

I’ve suffered with bloating for years now.
I’ve seen a couple of things come up in adverts recently - JS Health Vitamins detox and debloat, and Symprove….
I'm almost tempted to give one of them a go as I’m so fed up of ending every day 2 sizes bigger than when I started, so I just wondered if anyone had tried either of those or if you have any other recommendations for something that actually works.

Thank you!

Drink more water and trial food eliminations starting with gluten.

What is it caused by? Gas bloating or water bloating?

I’ve had exactly the same thing, mostly caused by the menopause. After many tests and scans my Dr recommend Optibac, a probiotic in the form of a gummy. It wasn’t due to fluid retention, so I guess it’s been trapped wind. Optibac has been a game changer and I daren’t run out of it.

tuttifritti · 16/06/2025 07:43

Is it perimenopause? I suffered pretty bad for a year. I would wake in the night, embarrassing gurgling noises from my tummy, horrendous wind and just felt horrible. I tried supplements like probiotics that worked to an extent and cost the earth. Started estrogel in January and now pretty much back to normal.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 16/06/2025 18:49

I would say gas is the culprit!

@tuttifritti I think I am in perimenopause but I’ve suffered from bloating for years now so it predates it!

I’m sitting here looking 10 months pregnant. I had an almost flat stomach this morning. This happens every day, so I’m following!

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 17/06/2025 22:06

@PuceisNotGreenWhoKnew I’m thinking of giving kefir a go first as it’s a lot cheaper option than these supplements and powders!

I was just like this. Did food elimination. Hugely caused by wheat. If I eat it bloated and fatigued. If not fine. Improved my life 100%

PuceisNotGreenWhoKnew · 17/06/2025 22:24

@Tacocatgoatcheesepizza that’s exactly what I’ve been doing but I think it’s making the listing worse if anything. Maybe I just need to give it time.

Alltheyellowbirds · 17/06/2025 22:36

Work on improving your overall gut health. Probiotics. Collagen and bone broth. Fermented foods like live yoghurt, kefir, kombucha. Lots of fibre (though you may need to build that up slowly). Reduce processed foods as much as you can.

After thirty years of utterly miserable IBS and bloating I spent a few months doing the above and now have a happy, functioning gut. It’s pretty life-changing.

Oh no that’s so disappointing to hear! How long have you been taking it for?

Sounds like possible food intolerance.

PuceisNotGreenWhoKnew · 18/06/2025 21:54

A week! So not long.

i know mine isn’t good intolerance. I’ve been through all that. Mines hormones, the balance of progesterone and oestrogens.

Which optibac is it? I’ve been using one but maybe there’s a better version?

This is the version that I use (picture included). After all the rich food over Xmas I also used a mixture of 1 tsp of turmeric, a drop of honey mixed in a small amount of hot water, I also add a little coconut milk as I don’t like the taste of turmeric. This mixture works wonders, I take it anytime my stomach feels out of sorts, even my husband uses it and he’s a doubting Thomas on all my tinctures, but this works for him. I drink it through a glass straw so my teeth aren’t stained 🤪

Oh, good advice about the staining!

I’ve been looking at those gummies, might get some to trial. my stomach has been terrible for bloating since Xmas!

Hope you have as much success as I have. My G.P has lots of her patients on them now. It’s lovely to have a Dr that thinks outside the box.

She’s so supportive, currently we have my mother in law with us after a failed discharge from hospital on the 18/12, bedridden getting over pneumonia, normally lives in another county. She would have died if the community ambulance took her home. I asked my Dr for help and she has been amazing, has visited and calls me for updates and arranged for community physio and occupational therapists to visit. She is absolutely bloody amazing, and I’m very lucky to have her. Sorry to digress, I wish everyone had a Dr like her 🤗

Wow, that’s such a good service. I have to say that the GP service where I am is really integrated within the county so all of the services are joined up and work well together, I’ve had execellent experiences personally. Although I know it can be a struggle for others elsewhere in the country.

Thanks for the advice!
