What would you pay for a week self catering on the Lake District? First week in Sept and no WiFi.

Oh sorry, £1400

The money is subjective-a lot for you might be low for somebody else.
Could you contact the owner (you say you’ve been before) and ask if there’s a reduction for using only 1 bedroom? It would certainly reduce their cleaning times and costs.

Otherwise it’s the market that decides the price.

£1400 does seem a bit steep for 2 people in September, so I would do a bit of due diligence. Message the owners see if they would offer a discount for low occupancy as less cleaning etc, say how much you love the property and location and also check airbnb and local agencies for other properties in the area and see how much a one bed costs versus your original one. Who knows, you may find something nicer for less money.
But if you have your heart absolutely set on this property, then for the sake of a few hundred pounds I would go for it if it means a lot to you.

I’ve done that already. It’s let through an agent and they insist that the price is the price!

I’m absolutely sure I have read this exact OP before and loads of advice was given.

rookiemere · 16/06/2025 09:11

Have you looked at other properties OP? The quality through local letting agencies usually good so Cumbrian Cottages and another one whose name escapes me.

£1500 - £2000 for a property that size and during term time. Personally, I’d book a smaller property if it’s just for 2 of you, or ask if they will accept a discount as you won’t be using all the space and will be using less energy than 8 people would.

It does seem a lot and not something I could afford or want to pay when I didn't need the extra space. But, that doesn't mean it is out of your budget and only you will know that.
I suppose what you are paying the extra for is getting a property that you know you already like and you have to decide if that worth the extra that it costs.

Is it the area? Or something about that particular property that you like?

Can you look up smaller ones and compare the cost and see if something cheaper takes your eye. If not, it might be the deciding factor in making you realise that this one is worth splashing out on.

If not worth it then perhaps go somewhere else this time just the two of you and see if anyone would like to join you for a return trip to the place you like so much another time.

I wouldn’t stay at a house with no wifi and no mobile signal, and when I have seen them, they have been very much on the lower end of things, more bothy like than holiday cottage. So £60 a night?

If it had wifi/mobile signal, more £90 a night out of season. As a rule, I don’t spend more than £100 a night on self-catering. We have stayed in some amazing places, but I’m not paying £1000 a week for a holiday cottage.

The house next to ours is a holiday cottage. 3, maybe 4 bedrooms. Beautiful location, on the edge of a national park in a desirable area. Outside of school holidays it’s about £650 a week.

lemontart13 · 29/08/2025 00:59

It depends a lot on the area and the type of accommodation. In Keswick, for example, prices for a week in September start at around £500 for something simple and can go over £1000 if you want a larger house or one with a lake view. I used the ^https://www.selfcatering.co.uk/^ platform precisely because you can compare offers from all over the area, from small cottages to large family properties. Plus, I liked that they also had last-minute discounts listed.

It's a lot of money for space you won't necessarily use if there is just the 2 of you, only you know whether it is worth it though.
For me, location is everything with a holiday let and we have paid quite a lot for the location we want and not regretted it.

Must have wifi for me though.

We are paying nearly £900 ish for a week in Whitby soon, in a 1 bedroom place with a hot tub, private parking and views over the estuary and across Whitby from the balcony. Not everyone's cup of tea but I love the area and we are within walking distance of everything so it's worth paying a premium for us.
