Campervan trip to France - where should we stop?

We're taking our campervan to France for the last two weeks in August and want your recommendations for lovely places to visit. We have spent loads of time on the west coast and in the south, and now want to explore central / eastern regions. I've never been further east than Paris so am slightly clueless about where to aim for.

Any little gems of towns that we should try and work into our itinerary? Campsite recommendations? We're probably not going to get much further south than Lyon (the van is slow and we don't want to spend hours driving every day). It's just me and dh; we like pretty, untouristy places, walking, swimming, lazing in the sun, drinking wine and eating cheese 😋

I know I could ask chatgpt but I thought the MN hivemind would be a better place to start!

Colmar . Beautiful town in Alsace region . We stayed in Turkenheim - just 10 mins away by train . Station right next to the campsite and frequent service. Wine region so some lovely vineyards .

Also Lake Annecy . Gorgeous lake . Several good campsites .

Would echo @seenitallbefore’s recommendation of Colmar. If you like wine, then the wine bar La Cercle des Aromes, there is highly recommended. More than 100 wines by the glass - 50% from Alsace (including some with bottle age) and the rest mostly from the rest of France.

Annecy is also nice. Neither of these is not touristy, though - but both worth visiting.

For a less busy area, The Cevennes, and the Gorges du Tarn in south-central France might be worth a look.

We also really enjoyed the Jura, between the Alps and Alsace. Great cheese (the home of Comte) and wine - Arbois is a nice little town.

The other wine area to visit is, of course, Burgundy/Bourgogne - south and west of Dijon. Beaune is a nice town to visit…
