Hi, being nosey here but why did she qualify for dla? Did she get the higher mobility component I take it ?

Yes, as stated above, you can only learn to drive on the public road and take your driving test at 16 if you are entitled to the higher rate mobility component of DLA or the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP.

I’m guessing people with adhd don’t usually get the higher rate mobility do they ?

I’d be very surprised if they did

Vatsallfolks · 15/06/2025 18:10

No . Higher rate DLA would be very unusual for ADHD without any other disability. As the mobility part - if awarded at all - would be because supervision is required . High rate is almost exclusively for unable to walk / virtually unable to walk. For PIP (adults) the high rate is the same with the exception of mental impairment..

IReallyLoveItHere · 15/06/2025 18:17

If any DC are wanting to drive as soon as possible I highly recommend the 14+ driving courses. They're not on public roads and so DC can get to a high standard of control and rule knowledge before they get their provisional license. Then need some on road lessons before test.

We used to live in a very rural area with no public transport or anything in walking or easy biking distance. admittedly most kids learned the basics on the farm tracks as young teens but then they went to these places so they got passed and independent ASAP.

countingthedays945 · 15/06/2025 20:42

@jimmyeatworldshe received the higher rate mobility as she had panic disorder and agoraphobia. The car was a safe space even though she couldn’t walk to places, she could drive. Agoraphobia is complex.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 16/06/2025 02:19

Yes

uncomfortablydumb60 · 16/06/2025 02:20

Thelonelydonkey · 16/06/2025 02:24

I know of several who do, I don't necessarily agree that they should but they do!
