My gas meter reading for today is £257. What the hell!?

I glanced at my inside meter thingy and that's what it was showing and I thought bloody hell stupid thing.
Went out to my gas meter and it said the same.
How in the heck can that happen.

It's just for today. I've been out all day. This amount racked up at about 8 this evening

Eon.

I've sent an email, taken pics of everything but they're not even open to speak to until Monday.

No debt, I'm in credit etc...

Bloody freaky. I did think about the storms last night but realised that all digital clocks, ie microwave and oven were correct so no power cut.

I also googled that gas meters have their own built-in battery anyhow.

So much confusion.

My parents’ one did this a little while ago and it was a fault with the meter. Took ages to sort but they did eventually.

If it's a smart meter can you log on to your account and check when exactly it has gone haywire?

JoshLymanSwagger · 15/06/2025 06:34

@Tcateh can you smell gas?
I'd be worried about a leak somewhere.
Get the emergency guys out to check it - if nothing else they may be able to confirm it's just a dodgy meter.

Hi yes it went bananas between 8 and 9 pm, no smell of gas.

It's been normal between 9pm last night and on waking back to a normal read for the time of day.

I could only tell this from my indoor meter by scrolling through the day.
My app only shows a daily total it's not one that shows a detailed account it's very basic with eon next.
I took photos of the readings showing the times on the indoor thingy for proof.

Also according to the app no readings since Friday.

I’ve had this before, the battery in the meter was starting to go, as it was over the ten year limit, and it was explained to me by the engineer who (eventually replaced it) that as the battery gets weaker the laser which reads the meter gets weaker or temperamental which leads to sporadic increases or decreases in gas use readings.

Contact your gas provider as soon as possible and ask them to check when the meter’s battery is due for changing and take a photo every day. I’m afraid to say it did take nearly 3 years to resolve this and took me going to the ombudsman and a lot of stress to be refunded for the over payments. Good luck!

Oh no. Did you have it reading wrong for a while or was it a one off glitch like mine yesterday

Thanks

No readings since Friday on the app is fairly normal I think, we are with BG and the app and website are usually a day or two behind with updating the daily totals.

At least the amount it is out is an impossible amount of gas to use in the timespan so should be easier to sort out than if it had been a smaller amount over time

Oh is it?

Yes it's pretty glaringly obvious I hope 😂

It suddenly increased and I contacted bulb straightaway and they said it must have been our recently fitted boiler (engineer came straight away and said it wasn’t, it was the meter). It was almost a year before bulb finally got it replaced. We took daily photographs and the readings were very erratic, sometimes nothing for days and then when we’d been away for the weekend in the summer so no heating on or hot water use it jumped massively. Eventually the meter completely stopped working due to the battery having gone so then bulb had to concede there was a problem with it. I think I’m right in saying there should be some way of working out the life of the battery in your meter just by looking at it, but if not, your gas provider should have this on record and they are responsible for ensuring you have a functioning meter.
