Partner has jammed a door shut & I'm trying not to lose it

Staying with a frail elderly relative whilst their spouse & carer is away. House is like a fortress - there's an internal door that's usually locked at night, which is totally unnecessary as back door has 2 dead bolts & an actually bolt. So I went to bed and left internal door unlocked & open. My partner decided to lock internal door & now it's jammed! Can't access boiler to put heating on for frail thin relative, also can't access washing machine for any soiled clothing.

Not sure why I'm posting other than to stop me screaming at him. He knows this house is a nightmare - think cluttered antique shop owned by people with a war time 'keep that it'll come in useful' attitude. Plus there's a fighting chance door was 'mended' by an in law who 'mends' stuff and inevitably makes it worse.

The issue isn’t your partner - it’s the ridiculous house
you’ve said yourself it’s not great so not his fault

maslinpan · 14/06/2025 08:17

Take a deep breath, he didn't do it deliberately - I assume - you are obviously in for a stressful time as a substitute carer so possibly on a bit of a hair trigger. Hand over the problem to your OH and if there's no resolution he needs to contact a local locksmith/handyman. In the meantime go and have a cup of tea.

WD40?

I can't understand what's your issue with him.

So usual practice IS to lock this door? Which he did?
How frail is the spouse?

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 14/06/2025 08:22

Why is it his fault the door has jammed?

ConstantIllness · 14/06/2025 08:27

I think you're really stressed at the whole situation and he's a useful conduit for it. It's not his fault, you know this.

June2025 · 14/06/2025 08:41

Maybe because he was faffing with things when he had been asked not to

Anyoneforcricketandtennis · 14/06/2025 08:49

I dont understand if the internal door is normall why partner locking it has caused it to jam. Do you think he has done something deliberately to the door?

Sounds as though if not being able to open it means you can't care for the elderly relative properly you will need to get an emergency locksmith out.

Where was he asked not to? There's nothing in the OP to indicate that.

nowhere does it say he was told. It’s not his fault no matter how much you want it to be

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 14/06/2025 08:51

Can you go outside and in through the other door and try from the other side? Or at least jiggle it from the other side while the other tries to unlock it if the locks aren't accessible from outside?

CinnamonCinnabar · 14/06/2025 09:51

I don't understand why the door is jammed, but it's an old house which is poorly maintained. Can't get in from the other way as the back door is bolted on the inside (and the only way to get to the back door is via jammed door). Door is between kitchen & utility. I know it's not really my partners fault but he does do stuff 'to be helpful' without asking and it makes things worse (think tidying away kitchen stuff I've just got out, chucking out things I wanted to keep). I've said many times I think locking an internal door is mad but I doubt my partner has ever paid any attention!

Now have a Saturday locksmith coming out. Can't deal with soiled bedding till door is open as washing machine is in utility which we can't access.

Is the door unlocking, but is just jammed shut or is it the actual lock that's jammed?
