Where is your router?

I’’m reading the list of places your router should not be:

In drawers and cupboards

Near windows and mirrors.
close to a wall
Near electronic equipment such as baby monitors, wireless phones or televisions

Place your router centrally in your home
Place your router as high as possible
Place your router in an area with no obstacles which could block the Wi-Fi signal.

so where does that leave? Dangling from the ceiling in the middle of the room? (Although then it would be close to the light and it probably wouldn’t like that either)

also worth noting the fibre enters the house on the corner nearest the road as they refused to put it further along the wall where I’d be able to comply with the instruction to place it centrally in the house.

the router came with a cable 1 metre long so can only be at the most 1m away from the wall and window so put it 1 meter away from the wall into the room?? but it should be as high as possible? So on a table? One meter in from the wall. With the cable stretching from the connection box to the table. That’s practical 🙄

oh and it needs two sockets. One for the little gray box and one for the actual router. So it must be close to two free sockets but also no more than one meter from the box (because of the cable). And not near anything electronic (are sockets electronic?)

also worth noting my upgrade was necessary as my unreliable connection was “due to environmental conditions” like living in a house with walls and windows amd doors and other electronic devices.

In the attic.

In the attic.

I had to stop working in the attic as despite having two boosters 3 floors was too much for the poor dear to cope with. So I built an extension.

does yours reach to the ground floor?

Yes

Ownedbykitties · 13/06/2025 23:33

Completely ridiculous

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 13/06/2025 23:34

Ours is on the floor behind the TV stand in the front room, because that's where the fibre box is on the outside wall and the access to two sockets thing. So it's close to TV, sky box etc. We've got a booster upstairs and one by the back door and it all works just fine.

Seawolves · 13/06/2025 23:35

Down by the side of the sofa n the corner of the room, next to the doors to the patio. It's where the fibre comes into the house.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 13/06/2025 23:37

Ours is on a sideboard in the living room as it's the only place it could go due to where the fibre comes into the house. It's not the prettiest of objects!

Ponderingwindow · 13/06/2025 23:41

Our router is next to the network panel and our home server in the utility room. We have wifi boosters strategically placed in the house because there were spots where the WiFi was not as good.

Me or the router?

I don’t feel like a home server is what I need considering I have issues maintaining a reliable WiFi connection, just so I can watch Netflix and occasionally do some work, but I could be wrong

Ours is on the tv stand behind the tv, in the corner of the sitting room, where the satellite dish is on the outside wall. We have Sky Q with another mini box in the room next door, which is a living room/dining/kitchen. We don't have any problems with the wifi signal at all.

mathanxiety · 14/06/2025 00:37

I have a square C - shaped apartment. The router is at one of the corners. It's pretty central, bang in the middle of the area where we use the most wifi, in an alcove where I have my desk, PC, and printer. I keep it on my desk. We have no issues.

greencartbluecart · 14/06/2025 00:45

Since you can’t change the laws of physics

The grey box where the fibre terminate a can attach to a longer Ethernet cable that you can buy for a few quid then the router can be moved around

ans you can also buy ethernet cable if you have something in a WiFi dead spot or something that uses a lot of bandwidth - to connect the device to the router. That will also free up capacity on your WiFi

we just pinned the cable round the skirting and doors but you can thread it through the walls if that’s your thing

I never read all these instructions- mines in the cupboard in the hallway 😂

I only did as I have to keep being encouraged to upgrade due to the “environmental conditions” which mean my signal constantly drops.

it just struck me as one of those things where the consumer cannot win.

I have a new build flat - when I moved in the router was already hanging on a wall in the utility cupboard.

SillyMillieMops · 14/06/2025 08:53

Mine’s on the lounge windowsill. It needs to be near the phone point so no choice.

EleanorReally · 14/06/2025 08:55

at the front door, on the window sill, where the phone point is
openreach came round recently to give us a new setting and made no comment about placing it there

msmillicentcat · 14/06/2025 08:57

Mine is in the windowsill in the office. I would just place it where makes sense for your house and if you have any problems with signal then try moving it around.

HonestOpalHelper · 14/06/2025 09:11

Mine is in the corner of the front room nearest the road, where the FTP comes in, no problems with reception anywhere, but my wifi printer doesn't like something so that's hooked up with a USB lead.

Marmight · 14/06/2025 09:19

Do you need boosters to help with reliability?

You built an extension for your router? Fair play.

CoastalCalm · 14/06/2025 09:21

In the upstairs airing cupboard as that’s where the developers put the BT set up - leave door slightly ajar and no issues

Mingenious · 14/06/2025 09:22

We’ve got the main router behind the Tv in the front room. We’ve also got signal boosters dotted about the house as we’ve got really thick engineering type brick walls.

Slatterndisgrace · 14/06/2025 09:23

I don’t really have a choice with mine, it’s got to be where they wired it up.
