Rome in February?

Thinking of doing this at the end of February next year for a weekend, staying in the Esquilino area. Solo female traveller who doesn't like hot weather or crowds hence preference for low seasons. I'm presuming Rome is safe for me? Particularly on the train from the airport or to walk around the colloseum area at night...

Any tips welcome. Many thanks.

I've been in Feb and was lovely weather. Was just before Covid lockdown though so unusually quiet! It felt safe, I wasn't on my own though but didn't really notice anything though I believe there is a pick pocketing issue.

Tips - breakfast at the Vatican if you want to go to the Sistine Chapel and miss crowds. Arena floor tour of Collosseum. Opera at St Paul's within the Walls.

Do it! Rome feels very safe. I enjoyed doing the Colisium first thing in the morning, no queues in January at all!

Great! Any restaurant recommendations?

There is a roof top restaurant on top of Hotel Artemeide which is lovely. But everywhere we ate was great to be honest!

I went in January and it was brilliant. Not to cold. And really really quiet. No queues at all.

I took DD in Feb 2019 and it was wonderful! So beautiful, friendly, helpful people, we didn't feel unsafe, ticket touts were very persistent was the only thing.

I was there in February this year, and it was utterly lovely.

We had a very good meal and had a great time in the lengthy queue at Dal Forno Alla Soffitta on Via (pizzas, pasta, inexpensive) , and had an excellent meal and wonderful wine at Ad Hoc (pricier) overlooking the Circus Maximus.

I was with other people, but walked home alone from dinner more than once without the slightest sense of risk. Just take the normal precautions you’d take in any city.

Thanks all. How is the public transport? Really hated the subway in New York so it's the main thing I try to research when travelling somewhere new

Take out good insurance. Sorry.

My watch was stolen from my wrist and my husband’s wallet stolen from his inside breast jacket pocket, hung over his dining chair, as I sat opposite.

February will be perfect. We only used public transport once to get to Vatican, it’s such a walkable city

Rome is walkable, mostly. You need a bus or metro to get to the outer bits and maybe the far side of the park but it’s about €1.50 per journey to go anywhere so it’s very good value. The ticket machines are in different languages including English. We would walk a (helluva) long way then come back by metro or bus. Get a very good map.

The NY subway is unusually crap as underground’s in major cities go, though. Rome’s is perfectly straightforward, considerably better signposted, and tbh, not all that necessary. Rome is very walkable apart from in extreme summer heat. The last two times I’ve been in Rome I haven’t used the underground at all.

Alfredo’s for the Fettuccine.

Radiatorvalves · 14/06/2025 10:04

We used the underground in March this year. It was dead easy. A lot easier than my last experience of foreign metros (Washington DC). I felt safe but wasn’t dressed up. Book everything in advance.
