Why do kids seem a lot smaller these days?

I was helping out at my daughter’s elementary school, and it dawned on me. When I was attending back in the day, I remember having to look up at the third graders, I was actually pretty nervous because they looked a lot bigger than me. Why is this not the case now? When I was a child they were huge what is going on?

Have you noticed chairs seem smaller too and you can’t swing your legs from them like you could in first grade? Bet you can reach things from shelves you couldn’t then too. The only explanation is everything around you, including the kids, have all shrunk.

They aren't.
When I started secondary school, I was taller than most of the boys in my year. I did stop growing not much later, so they all over took me by a long way but not for another year or two.
Now a lot of the year six boys coming to the end of primary school are at least my height already (I work in a primary)

i read it was down to high amount of UPF as our food intake. We’re shorter and fatter and malnourished as a result

from that UPF book Ultra Processed People

I agree with you there, that some of the kids look super dinky. But I was referring to Ethan if you were to ask the third grader which one of you is the biggest. They still seem really small. Why was it that when I was attending I had to look up at those same Exact third Graders? I remember looking at them thinking that they were jacked, and Standing amongst all of them now they all just look A whole lot smaller and weaker than the way I used to see them . And yes my daughter is the same age but it didn’t dawn on me until I went to her class.

Because you were a child then and you are an adult now? It would be weird if you had to look up to third graders as an adult, wouldn’t it?

Forgive me for stating the bleeding obvious, but you grew up and are taller now.
Confused

You clearly haven’t seen my 4 year old. 1.2m, 25kg 😅 there’s a couple of children in his class that are noticeably small but I’d say most are average really.
