Heat pump tumble dryer

Hi, we’re on our second heat pump dryer and once again it’s stopped drying clothes after nearly two years. Is this a thing with them? Should we switch to a normal dryer?. The machine will do a full cycle but the clothes are still wet - I’ve tried rubbing it up to three times and the best we are getting is damp. Any knowledge on this would be appreciated!

My AEG one comes with a 5 year guarantee. I would get one with a longer parts and labour guarantee if you get a new one. Have you cleaned out all the filters? Mine has 2 that both need cleaning out, 1 less regularly than the other one.

LeroyJenkinssss · 13/06/2025 11:16

Ours is about four years old and no issues (and it’s stored in the garage with zero insulation so has put up with all temps). You definitely have to empty the water thing every time and filters regularly otherwise the clothes don’t dry.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/06/2025 11:18

IMO tumble driers are just getting too complicated. Ours (very basic, just two settings, hot and less hot) is still going strong around 25 years later. I do clean the filters with almost every use.

CatsorDogsrule · 13/06/2025 11:25

5 year old Samsung still going strong. It is used for at least one or two loads daily, but with it being a heat pump and us having solar panels, the energy use is very low.

As pp have asked, do you clean all of the filters? Have you read through your manual for troubleshooting?

K138 · 13/06/2025 11:35

If you are running it a few times and it's still damp is it an issue with the moisture sensor? New appliances rely on sensors rather than running for a set time to save energy.

Not sure what brand yours is but https://www.beko.co.uk/support/how-to-guides/tumble-dryers/how-to-clean-the-drying-sensor-of-your-tumble-dryer is a summary of where to find/how to clean them 😁

herewego9 · 13/06/2025 11:49

Thanks all, much appreciated.

we are pretty on it with the filters and water collector so sounds like we’ve just been unlucky. The first unit was a Candy and now it’s a Hotpoint. I’ll read up on the sensors thanks.

I have a heat pump dryer, had it years. The only time it doesn't dry at the end of a cycle is if the filter needs cleaning or I have mixed light weight with heavy weight clothes

Thwart · 13/06/2025 11:50

We gave up on heat pumps. Chap who came to pronounce the last one dead said not to bother with them again.

Can you put it on a timed load? If you can try that and see if that dries it. If it does, then its not the sensor.

Pedallleur · 13/06/2025 13:20

v.rarely here positive things about them but I've read some success stories. I use a normal dryer just because they work and are easy to buy/replace. I can see the energy saving appeal of heat pump but I havent got the energy to faff with strange drying patterns.

dootball · 13/06/2025 13:26

We've got an AEG heat pump drier and so far it's been super. Takes surprisingly little extra time compared to our old dryer too.
Ours saves nearly £1 in electricity every load compared to our old conventional one, so even if it breaks after two years it will have covered the cost of buying it - although ours has a 5 year guarantee.

Daisypod · 13/06/2025 16:08

We’ve had ours just over two years (Bosch) and I absolutely love it. Never had a problem with it not drying and the bonus that it doesn’t shrink clothes like a regular dryer.
Hotpoint and Candy are both made by the same company btw and they tend to have terrible reviews. We’ve had our Bosch dishwasher for 19 years and it’s still going strong so I’m sticking with them for appliances

Grumpybear33 · 13/06/2025 16:15

Had ours for nearly 7 years (Samsung). I don’t think it dries as well as it used to but still going strong. Used on average 7-10 times a week. I just put it back on for a 30 minute timed cycle when it thinks it’s finished. The cost per load is so much lower than other dryers.

herewego9 · 13/06/2025 16:29

I hadn’t realised Hotpoint and Candy were the same company! Never again then, they’ve both broken around the same age. I have added a timed load as a last ditch attempt but sadly think it’ll be a new one 😭

Heat pump tumble driers are useless.

Not all heat pump dryer are equal! Mine is fantastic!

Michele09 · 13/06/2025 16:36

Same as daisypod. Bosch heatpump dryer, dishwasher and also fridge. All great. I just set the heat pump dryer to mixed load and it beeps when it's dry. Nothing I dislike about it. Everything is dry and it doesn't take that much longer than my other dryer which cost a lot more to run.

dontcallmelen · 13/06/2025 17:04

Also have a Bosch heat pump dryer, bloody love it takes far less time that’s my old condenser one lots of really useful programs.

Wexone · 13/06/2025 17:06

mine is a bosch and until we moved recently was used every day no issues and is about 5 years old
my sister has just replaced hers - over 10 years old - she was wanna the 1st I know to get one and it was the most basic one. just crashed but was used at least twice a day. you buy the right one should last years

stayathomer · 13/06/2025 17:06

Solidarity op, have a condenser and have spent all morning trying to get it working by cleaning out every possible part. Only three and a half years old- my mum still has hers after thirty years!!

herewego9 · 13/06/2025 17:17

Ah sorry to hear that @stayathomer- such a hassle when they go wrong! I honestly expected about 5 years out this machine but 2 is really not good.

Wow @LuckysDadsHatthanks so ouch for the tip, I’ve tried it and have a dry load. I wonder what’s wrong with the normal cycle? I had never considered a timed load before.

Ours is a Bosch. I'll have had it 6 years in September. Never had a problem. And it's an A++ rating

That's great! At least you know now its a problem with the sensor so you can say to the repair guy what's wrong with it! And in the meantime you still have a dryer, just put in on timed loads.

I have had a sensor go on an old condenser dryer. It does happen.
