Cake… it’s still hot and I want to go to bed

I’ve made a chocolate cake. 3 layers using a buttermilk recipe in case relevant. But it’s only been out the oven 20 mins and I’m tired! Can I wrap it up in foil and put it away? Or will that make it too soggy?

Put a tea towel over it?

I hate this, I try to make cakes sometimes of an evening and it always takes longer than usual so doesnt go in the oven until 9 or 930, then takes ages and ages to cool down. I wont go to bed until it does, I want it nicely packed away.

If it's still hot, then no. Why not leave it out overnight? Cover it with a clean teatowel if you want to.

I would place it inside the microwave so it can cool down and no flies can get it.

Wrap it in a tea towel

Bobnobob · 12/06/2025 22:45

its on a cooling rack… will it be ok to stay on that will a tea towel on top?

Leave it out all night on the cooling rack, I often do this. I have net food covers which I cover mine with just in case of a marauding fly.

TheChosenTwo · 12/06/2025 22:54

I would leave it covered with a teatowel or a cooling rack. But I’d be most tempted to just stay up as I get very pernickity about cakes and sponge texture and I think covering it does tend to give a more sort of dense/heavy sponge as the moisture can’t all fully escape.
it will be fine though if you really can’t wait up.

I wouldn't put a tea towel over it because it will keep the steam in and make the cake soggier at least that's what I would think.
I would leave it on a cooling rack and put the cooling rack on top of a plate in the cupboard shut the door that should be enough ventilation for it to cool safely overnight.
