Eye pain

Looking to see if anyone has advice as opticians are closed.

I went to opticians this morning for contact lenses. As I've never had them before they wanted me to practice taking them in and out. I did my right eye first then I was sure the assistant took the lens off me and gave me another to do my left eye.

When I finished my left eye she told me to remove the one still in my right eye. I said I was pretty sure I'd already removed it (she was watching me the whole time) The assistant said I 100% had not removed it and was definitely there. I was sure it wasn't in my eye so the assistant and an opticians looked and said it was there.

This made me think I must of been mistaken so I proceeded to try and remove the lens for some time and the assitant was telling me to pinch harder and use more pressure. I asked her to please check as I was pretty sure there was no lens in my eye and it was becoming really painful. Eventually an optician came and checked properly and said there was definitely no lens in my eye but I'd spent all this time basically pinching amd scratching my bare eyeball.

My eye was extremely red and they said it would probably be fine and not to put the lenses back in today. My right eye is now extremely painful and blurred vision. Is this something to be worried about or should it heal itself?

I'd be quite pissed off about that!

I don't know but can share my story - I accidentally hit myself in the eye ball with considerable velocity with a bottle I had been squeezing near my eye (ironically my contact lens cleaner bottle that was slightly wet and I was really squeezing the last drop out).

My eye was red and really sore - went to A&E and they had a property look into it etc and said I had scratched the cornea and it should heal in a week or two. Gave me some antibiotics drops. All fine now.

Yeah I am quite annoyed the assistant laughed it off and said it must of popped out 🙄 I'm going to contact them in the morning just panicked a bit with it being my eye.

What a bunch of idiots in the opticians. I'd be livid.

Have you got some eye drops? I'd put those in and just get an early night, rest your eyes.

Yes they gave me saline drops have put some in and hopefully get to sleep. I was so sure it wasn't in my eye until 2 different members of said it was and how important it was I got it out, cue me then scraping my bare eyeball for about 20 minutes 😭

I would get it checked out as you could potentially have a corneal abrasion, I would phone 111

forgetmeknot8 · 12/06/2025 21:13

Was going to say a corneal abrasion. Will need to be checked with the dye in your eye

Ohyessiricanboogie20 · 12/06/2025 21:29

Oh no really. I was hoping it would sort itself out. I'll call in the morning ss DH is nightshift and here with kids myself so cant really do much tonight . Such a silly thing to happen!

I'd call 111 just to be on the safe side. Might give you some advice

TheOliveFinch · 12/06/2025 21:54

@Ohyessiricanboogie20 if you have any lubricating eye drops they may make you feel a bit more comfortable in the meantime

Boriswentcamping · 12/06/2025 22:41

Oh no, I’d be really upset with them. Sounds like maybe you have given yourself a corneal abrasion. I would try and get it looked at either at an eye hospital, if you have one nearby or if not another opticians! Or a&e if all else fails. They will be able to put some dye in and see any damage. I’ve had corneal abrasions before and usually they heal ok in a few weeks but can re occur if not looked after. If it is this, they will likely give eye drops to prevent infection. And artificial tears to aid healing. But think you would be wise to get it checked out. Especially with ongoing pain. I was told that th blurry vision is a sign the cornea is damaged as that’s the bit the does the focusing. It should come right as it heals. I would be making a formal complaint!

uncomfortablydumb60 · 13/06/2025 00:29

i Think you have a corneal abrasion., I had the same after a drunken night out in my 20's.You should really get it checked
They will put yellow drops in and check with light.
Antibiotic drops and a couple of days resting eyes and all good

MissEloiseBridgerton · 13/06/2025 00:39

I'm pretty sure you don't need to call 111 for a corneal abrasion! Just go to bed and see how it is in the morning. Take a couple of paracetamol and when you close your eye, it'll likely feel better

I don't know the opticians you went to but when my son had a sore eye our specsavers can do an NHS appointment. I believe you have to call in the morning to make an appointment for the same day. (Check if it is free via NHS) although if your opticians does emergency eye appointments it should be free because it's their fault and the least they can do!

That isn’t correct advice for a corneal abrasion it does need to be looked at

MissEloiseBridgerton · 13/06/2025 17:12

Of course it does, but not our of hours

TheOliveFinch · 13/06/2025 18:24

@MissEloiseBridgerton with a lot of pain blurred vision and redness she could have a significant corneal injury and it is appropriate to call 111 so this can be triaged it may not need out of hours examination but getting out of hours advice is certainly appropriate. I have spent my whole working life in ophthalmology including triaging in emergency eye care

Ohyessiricanboogie20 · 13/06/2025 19:10

Got it looked at today at opticians. They said there is damage to the eye but nothing too serious. Gave me eye drops and sent me on my way.

You could well have scratched your cornea, this can lead to permanent scarring. You need chloramphenicol eye ointment ASAP, needs to be looked at properly. You need to complain about your experience at the optician's too
