Hairdressers - would you be upset…

Before anyone says it - I’ll say it myself. I know I’m being a bit pathetic here.

Have been with my current hairdresser for seven years & am/was fairly happy with him. Last week he was off sick for my appointment and another hairdresser stood in for him. I LOVED the cut & the way she dried it.

How do I change to her? It’s a small salon - only three stylists. I don’t want any awkwardness.

My question is if you’re a hairdresser, how do you feel when a client effectively dumps you for the stylist in the next chair?

To clients who’ve swapped how did you do it? Was it uncomfortable? Should I just go for it regardless?

Oh goodness, that's a difficult one. I have done similar but when I first went to the ( big, busy) salon it was made clear that if I wanted to try another stylist no one would bat an eyelid, different in a smaller salon.

Next time you make an appointment just do an either or you not fussed then pop in if "Emma" has any space that's fine, Then just style it out.

Could you book a appointment with the new hairdresser when it's your old hairdressers day off?

What day does your hairdresser have off?

As then going forward you are only available for appointments that day...

God I thought it was me! I didn't sleep well last night and thought I was feeling rougher than I first realised.

This!

Onthewaytothemountains · 12/06/2025 10:41

I did that. It was embarrassing and I talked to the preferred hairdresser saying this, I was worried etc, she reassured me, said she'd chat to her etc. It worked OK but I do still feel a bit bad when I go. I did point out how the other hairdresser had done a great job changing my colour etc.

Moveoverdarlin · 12/06/2025 10:43

I don’t think hairdressers mind. Clients come and go all the time. You’d be in a continuous strop if you got mad about every client who tried a colleague.

In the salon I go to, I chop and change stylists all the time, there’s one I try to avoid. But I just smile and wave to the ones that have done my hair before. You don’t have to explain.

Handbagcuriosity · 12/06/2025 10:44

I had this issue. I just booked with the hairdresser I preferred and smiled and waved at the original hairdresser if/when I saw them.

Inside I felt weird about it and a bit guilty but outwardly I was just friendly each time I went in. I’m relying on the fact that it is highly unlikely they will turn around and say to a client, what is wrong with my hairdressing skills. If they ever ask I’ve already got a response in my head to say ‘you’re amazing too I just fell in love with the hairdo they did and we had a good chat, nothing personal’

I don’t think a professional hairdresser would challenge their client. If they did I think I’d find another one

Aah thank you everyone 🙏. Think the day off plan is a good one - am going with that. Ha ha @Coffeeishot I understood you perfectly!

The same happened to me. I figured out my old stylist's day off and deliberately booked in for then. If they have online booking, it's much easier. Check their calendars and book in for preferred stylist when original stylist is unavailable.

Grammarninja · 12/06/2025 10:57

Sorry, hadn't read the thread when I posted. Seems like this advice has already been given.

DeSoleil · 12/06/2025 10:57

You are paying for a service and are free to choose whoever you want!

When you make the appointment you ask specifically for the person you want. No need to turn it into a drama.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 12/06/2025 11:20

Find out work patterns and book other stylist on original stylist day off?

JustMyView13 · 12/06/2025 11:32

Just switch.
If you want awkward, my hairdresser just cut my layers in wrong. Far too short. I’ve got to return to get it corrected and I’m seeing someone else. Original Hairdresser will be working.
Correctional work might involve cutting all my freshly dyed balayage out - that’s how short the layers are.
No idea how I didn’t notice when I left.

The issue isn’t about how to get past the booking… it’s about what do to when she’s sat in the hair dressers chair and her original hairdresser sees her!

Obviously you don’t owe the hair dresser anything OP but it can be awkward. I’ve been in a similar situation and had my original hairdresser ask why I wasn’t booked in with her. It was even more awkward because it was a case of you can either book through the salon or directly message each individual hair dresser on instagram and I’d always personally messaged her. So she knew I’d deliberately messaged the other. I second booking on his day off.
