Do you shop in cheaper food shops?

Friend made a comment saying she would only shop at M&S or Sainburys. Wouldn’t dare shop at Iceland or Farmfoods due to them being cheap. Surely it’s better money wise to buy what you can afford? I remember when I was young and if your parents shopped at Netto you were practical an outcast 😂 do people really care about this?

I honestly didn’t know this was still a thing! I’m an aldi girl through and through. Even if you can afford to spend more on groceries, why would you if you can get the same things cheaper elsewhere? Fair enough for certain things you only like from one place, or if that supermarket is the closest, but in general it makes no sense to me. There’s way better things to spend your money on.

I shop at Iceland for convenience (excellent home delivery service).
It's NOT cheap because an lot of what they sell is brand name products.
Things like jars of pasta sauce, cereal, tinned goods etc. All brand names.
I could get a lot of what I buy much cheaper at Lidl or Aldi but it's not convenient for me.
Always makes me laugh when people go on about Iceland being cheap 😂

I shop everywhere from Waitrose to Lidl. Couldn't give two hoots what anyone else thinks, nor do I care where anyone else shops. I like to change it up and live life in the fast lane. I go to Costco if I'm feeling especially wild and adventurous but I can't cope with that level of excitement more than three times a year maximum.

We’re very comfortably off. I shop predominantly at Aldi because I really like its products.

caringcarer · 12/06/2025 01:35

I shop at Aldi, Lidl and Morrisons. Nothing wrong with their food.

Zoflorabore · 12/06/2025 01:55

I’m 47 and I remember the Netto thing as we had one near my all girls high school and it was used as an insult by some people “your mum goes to Netto” because it was seen as really inferior and somewhere that only very poor people shopped.

I shop at Tesco, Aldi, M&S food, Farmfoods and Iceland and have no qualms about any of them as I like different things from each of the shops. My NDN thinks I’m posh because I go to M&S which is ridiculous.

We also do Amazon Fresh quite a bit which has a mixture of Amazon brand food aswell as Booths ( posh ) and Morrisons. I don’t get the snobbery around where people buy food from, there’s tons of choice and location/transport (or lack of) issues plus a million other valid reasons are usually what people consider when choosing where to go. I admit I don’t really like Lidl or Sainsbury’s and Asda is not convenient for me.

I don’t like Iceland and I’ve never heard of Farmfoods

I don’t care about brand names

I like fresh tasty ingredients I can cook with from the nearest supermarkets. I shop mainly from Tesco, Lidl and Waitrose.

Lavendersong · 12/06/2025 01:58

Also never heard of Netto

coxesorangepippin · 12/06/2025 01:59

Live abroad so won't bother mentioning the shop's names, but I shop at pretty much every supermarket to get the best deals.

I do only buy meat from the more expensive ones though.

A KitKat is a KitKat no matter what shop it's sold at, some places it's a $1, some places it's $2!

coxesorangepippin · 12/06/2025 01:59

I remember netto, it was yellow

HeddaGarbled · 12/06/2025 02:09

She’s right, but she should give Tesco & Waitrose a go as well.

Stinkbomb · 12/06/2025 02:14

I mix it up depending on convenience and what we need, so shop at Aldi (way home from work), Morrisons (online delivery), co-op (closest) or M&S/Sainsbury’s if I’m that side of town. Don’t judge anyone for shopping anywhere, expensive or slightly cheaper.

MyDelma · 12/06/2025 02:16

Agree with a pp that Iceland/Farm foods isn't always cheaper. For basics over the last few years M&S have had best prices. So your friend may be saving money going there. Waitrose also has good cheap basics including cheaper plain fish/chicken portions than Iceland and some of the deals and special offers are brilliant.

For frozen, Heron's is better value than Iceland/FF not least because you don't have to shop to offers to get the best prices. And their magical mystery section can be amazing.

Jollyjollyjollygoodie · 12/06/2025 02:21

Lidl.

sashh · 12/06/2025 07:24

This always makes me laugh.

M and S and Sainsbury's don't have factories to fill cans and pack biscuits.

I used to have relatives who worked at 'Fox's' biscuit factory, they made all of M and S biscuits then, I don't know if they still do.

As a child I loved visiting, there was always a huge bag of broken biscuits.

Chocolate biscuit selections from Tesco, Aldi, M&S and Waitrose appear identical

Despite having nearly identical biscuits, the boxes have varying price points
