Would this annoy you? My mum's behaviour.

Got my mum staying for a week. The annoying things she does:
She is addicted to her phone. People keep ringing/messaging her and does it back. Phone is constantly pinging.
Never asks anything about me. Nothing at all. Very animated when speaking to her friends though.
Barely asks the kids anything beyond an initial enquiry as to what they are doing at school. They are 16 and 14.
Makes a face when presented with meals. I am a pretty good cook and I enjoy cooking. She looks like I serve up absolute rubbish. And then proceeded to ask for random bits of food from the fridge.
Gets up and leaves the table once she's eaten. Doesn't wait for others to finish.
Leaves the toilet a mess. Every single time.
Leaves a mess in the kitchen even if only making a cup of tea.

She's 81 and in good health. Am I being mean as she's quite elderly. Would this annoy anyone else? DH is getting more and more offended by her behaviour and he's known her for 25yrs. She's always been like this.

That would irritate the hell out of me!

Loubylie · 12/06/2025 00:36

Yes she would annoy me.
If she's 81 and always been the same she's unlikely to change though.
I would see less of her.

Blodyneighbour · 12/06/2025 00:37

Put her phone on silent when you get a chance.
I'd just put up with it if it's just a week. As she is obviously very set in her ways.

Shes 81 OP and like you say always been like this. I'm glad to hear she has a good social life. Just inwardly roll your eyes and try to put up with it.

DeskJotter · 12/06/2025 06:09

She sounds minorly annoying, just get on with it.

healthybychristmas · 12/06/2025 07:34

I'm really shocked that she leaves her toilet in a mess. That's just not typical of women from that generation. What's going on there?

Yogabearmous · 12/06/2025 07:36

I would tell her to go back to the toilet and clear up her mess. I would also say next time she makes a face at your food you will not be cooking for her again. She sounds like she has regressed to a teenager , so treat her like one.

I think id stop inviting her to stay, id just see her for the day instead.

Lurkingandlearning · 12/06/2025 08:13

I think the crux of your problem lies in your first sentence. Don’t have her visit for a week. That is too long for any house guest, even one that isn’t annoying. Two days is enough for most people (I think). And you don’t have to feel guilty about her being lonely as she has a lot of contact with other people, so all that phone pinging is a good thing.

Leaving the toilet dirty is horrible. Did she do that when you were a child? I’m just wondering if she now has sight problems and can’t see it, or balance problems and physically can’t clean up after herself. I would call her back to the bathroom to sort it out though.

Thanks for your replies and opinions. She's here for a week because she moved abroad a couple of years ago so she's visiting us (and all her friends) and staying with us for a bit. She used to live just down the road to us previously and her behaviour used to drive me up the wall when she visited regularly and we had many arguments. It annoys me less now as she's here less obviously, but still irritating.
The toilet thing is weird. It's wee and water all over the seat and floor, and I feel bad for the kids and embarrassed on her behalf. I have told her but she denies that she leaves it like that, or that somebody else must have done it. The downstairs toilet smells of wee now because it's floor boards and difficult to get the smell out without a deep clean which I'll do once she leaves.
I'm trying not to be too confrontational as I know she's leaving soon, and it's not nice for kids to see me arguing with her yet again.

She's 81, have a heart.

SapporoBaby · 12/06/2025 13:22

Sounds like she’s hovering over the toilet instead of sitting which is strange unless she thinks your house is dirty. The pulling faces at food would wind me up

Fatcrab · 27/06/2025 03:59

Would irritate the hell out of me too, but as others say she is elderly and tomorrow isnt promised. You'll have to dig deep not to let yourself snap....but do put the phone on silent. The pinging is just destraction for her...being so busy shes not present with her actual family...its sad.
