Normal Bread Doesn't Make Good Sandwiches

Normal bread doesn't make good sandwiches but rolls and bagels and warburton thins do make good sandwiches. Normal bread is for toast. Does anyone agree with me?

Depends on the sandwich. Plain cheese or ham it’s fine. Also good for a toasted sandwich.

Overtheatlantic · 11/06/2025 01:00

I don’t agree. I grew up on normal bread sandwiches and prefer them.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/06/2025 01:13

Do you mean white sliced? I don't like that. My preference is proper sourdough.

Not sure what you mean by normal bread. People have different types of 'normal' for them. My favourite bread for sandwiches is granary or wholemeal seeded bread.

This thread title sounds like a proverb!
But I have no idea what fundamental life truth it would be trying to convey.

Oooh, jumping on to say when I started full time work in 1988, I was given a locker to put my stuff in. It was in direct sunlight. So, white bread, cheese and cucumber sarnie went in it at 7.30am. 12.30pm it was a gorgeous, soggy, melty, heated up mess!

It's still my absolute favourite and I've not died yet, although I can't quote recreate it!

GarlicMile · 11/06/2025 02:06

I eat sandwiches on wholegrain, seedy bread or alternatives like sourdough or crusty French bread. But I only really like sandwiches on bog standard, thick, white sliced! It's got something to do with biting through two bouncy layers of bland softness to get to the exciting filling.

Also, you cannot possibly have a chip butty on anything but thick white sliced!

coxesorangepippin · 11/06/2025 02:21

Meh I think it's fine

I find ciabatta etc too thick and crusty

Wholemeal every time

LaLaLaLavaChChChChicken · 11/06/2025 02:37

There is a bread hierarchy in this house.

Warburtons white for toast. This also makes the best toast for dipping in tomato soup.

Champion bread, wholemeal or seeded, for sandwiches.
Crusty bread, can be sourdough but must be fresh, for bread, butter, pate, cheese and wine.

I am in bed unable to sleep, but now I am fancying some hot buttered toast.

I love a chip butty on white bread. Also white bread for fish finger sandwiches.

What’s normal bread? There are so many different types of bread on sale, I just choose what suits my needs.

Meadowfinch · 11/06/2025 03:53

It depends what you mean by normal bread. The flabby stuff that comes in plastic bags from Tesco, you are absolutely right, but it isn't nice in any form. It's just nasty. Sour.

I gave up on shop bread last Christmas and have been making my own ever since. I order a sack of decent wholemeal bread flour from Wessex Mill and bake early most Sunday mornings.

Now we have lovely bread with a real crust and flavour that makes fabulous sandwiches. It's easy and fits nicely into my day.

set yeast to activate
take coffee back to bed
make dough and leave to rise
go for a run
knock dough down and leave to rise second time
shower & dress
bake
breakfast

Takes about an extra 35 mins all together. 😊

What I mean by normal bread is a sliced loathe of bread.

Same. Perfect for cheese and tomato, cheese and pickle, egg and cress or lettuce, roast beef and horseradish, ham and mustard, tuna and cucumber, etc.

The only thing that spoils them is mayo instead of butter, though I will admit to mashing freshly hard boiled eggs with mayo. But the bread will be buttered!

Helpmeplease2025 · 11/06/2025 09:24

Different sandwiches need different bread. A cheese sandwich has to be on white. Chicken mayo has to be on granary. Charcuterie meats go on crusty bread or fresh sourdough. Bacon and egg etc on a roll or a nice, lightly bagel.

Warburtons thins are abominable though. SW relics.

The problem is, you are buying shite bread then, loathe is the word!
I rarely buy pre-sliced bread and most supermarket bread is rubbish. I buy my ‘normal’ bread as a whole loaf from the bakery. It makes a delicious sandwich.

It doesn't much matter if you say it in a Yoda voice...

No don't agree

But I do think it's so worth spending the extra money on Warburton's rather than generic brand. Can really see the difference
