Standing “seats” on airlines supposedly coming out next year

It’s supposed to be a cheaper way of flying . I think it’s miserable, and completely disabilist cos how can someone disabled stand for a flight?

On top of that, how is it safe during turbulence or god forbid a crash.

If this was true, and I highly doubt it is. Don’t buy standing room tickets. You can pay extra for your seat. Not an issue.

I've been seeing this but I can't understand it. You aren't even allowed to stand up when the seat belt light is on - so how can someone just be standing! What about take off/landing? Are they going to be belted in in a standing position? What stops them being thrown around even if they are strapped in?

Anzena · 10/06/2025 18:29

I think Ryanair suggested this some years ago as a publicity stunt.

Anyway, I have visions of being strapped to a backboard with those criss cross or over both shoulder belts that the pilots wear. It's a stunt.

I've got a copy of 'MAD' magazine from the 1970s which had a spoof feature about airlines bringing in things like charges for meals and drinks, charges for booking seats and bringing in 'standee' tickets. In 2025 it seems prophetic rather than satirical! Look out for pay-toilets and having to weigh yourself before getting on the plane to determine your ticket price, because those were other things it suggested.

LostMySocks · 10/06/2025 18:46

I'm sure I saw something about this the other day. There was still a seat with a seat back and a sort of straddle seat between you legs so that you could strap in. I can't remember if there was a strap between the legs.
Seemed a bit like a theme park ride where your legs dangle meaning less room required between rows.
I wouldn't choose this option now but might have done when I was younger to save money

DiscoBob · 10/06/2025 18:51

I saw one that's supposedly been approved where it's like a tiny slanted 'rest' thing for your butt and a backing thing so you can stay fairly straight. Sounds very uncomfortable.
I guess if they sell the tickets for a fiver or something? On a flight that's an hour or less?

But what if someone unwell or disabled tries to use it as they can't afford the proper seat, then suffers an emergency and needs to be seated in a traditional way? Or needs emergency treatment?

It sounds awful. And I'd never use it due to disability but anyone without would end up with something wrong with them from standing for that long?!

legyeleven · 10/06/2025 19:10

Been seeing this news for ten years now, I highly doubt it’s true. However for short flights for lot of people they would be fine.

Pedallleur · 10/06/2025 19:11

I doubt that will happen. How would you brace? In an accident how is the stander restrained from hurtling forward at 100mph. Alrho I once met someone who worked in Russian oil fields and people did stand and animals were also on board. 1 flight to Bumcrackski Siberia so everything went on

StarlightLady · 05/07/2025 22:50

It won’t happen any more than £1/€1/$1 to use the loo.

mondaytosunday · 06/07/2025 00:47

These are prototype seats that are not approved for commercial use and are unlikely to be. Think of those fantasy cars you see at car shows - they make headlines but no one believes they are going to be reality any time soon.

pharmer · 06/07/2025 02:38

Freddie Laker was mooting the idea in the 70s- still hasn't happened and I doubt it will!

InWalksBarberalla · 06/07/2025 03:03

Why do you think these are coming OP? It's just a thing that's been floating around Facebook etc for years now. Or have you seen an actual credible report about this?

OonaStubbs · 06/07/2025 04:23

I hate flying these days, it's just awful.

sashh · 06/07/2025 05:00

It's a publicity stunt that comes up every couple of years.

Airplane seats have minimum standards that are virtually set in stone, at least for economy seats.

This is why brand new planes still have an ashtray even thought smoking has been banned on aircraft just about everywhere.

This. How is it disablest ffs.

Whynotjustengageyourbrain · 06/07/2025 05:05

Sounds OK on theory, but would really only worm if the flight was less than an hour. I doubt it would happen though as it would be against safety standards

PermanentTemporary · 06/07/2025 05:14

A friend said that she took off in a country where people were standing and chatting throughout. I guess it depends on the liability laws in that country.
