Tesco Humous

Does anyone know how I can feedback directly to Tesco about their new cheapened off houmous recipe? It is absolutely vile – thin and watery, dreadful texture and taste. It makes what I’m eating with it taste awful as well, so it will be scraped into the food recycling and I won’t be buying it again. Why oh why take a good thing and make it worse?

And can you recommend the best supermarket humous now please? Tesco recommendations will not be welcomed 🤢

Bloody awful, isn’t it? I had some last week at a picnic. I assume they changed it for a cheaper recipe.

It is the easiest thing in the world to make if you have a blender (even a stick one) so we’ve given up on buying it. It takes about as long as making a cup of tea takes.

Always fancied trying to make it. Can you advise how to? Thanks.

Why do food manufacturers do this? I have never, in my long life, tasted a new version of any food that wasn’t ruined.

It must be worth their while financially, so I have to assume many people’s palettes just don’t pick up the difference. I wouldn’t drink the vast majority of soft drinks now as I find sweeteners absolutely disgusting. It’s a regular complaint on here so I’m not alone, but the aisles fill of neon orange Fanta and the like so they’re obviously shifting it.

My mind always boggles when I read a thread about Roses or Heroes or Crème eggs being inedible - and the post implies this is a recent change. I stopped eating these things well over a decade ago as they’d become thoroughly unpleasant and I’ve seen numerous iterations of the complaint so I can only imagine what they’re like now!

Humus is really easy to make though

drain 2 tins chickpeas and then process to a mush with juice from 2-4 lemons ( your taste) around6 tbsp tahini , garlic ( salt and cayenne) and 4 spoons olive oil. I only have a hand held blender - a food mixer would be easier

at this point it’s quite thick
I then split into 5 heaps and freeze 4 of them in tiny containers ( space efficient in the freezer and that’s a few weeks between batches )

the 5th one - add desired flavors ( tuneric, chilli, raisins , sun-dried tomatoes ) and add water carefully till you get the right consistency ( you can add more oil but that ups the calories- basically tweak to your preference)

it’s a bit different to shop bought but much nicer IMO

@Tiredofwhataboutery my kids agree, Coop houmous is their favourite.
I bought Tesco houmous at the weekend, and I agree it is watery and a weird texture! I rarely buy it though, so I didn't realise it was a recipe change.
My kids are reeeeeaaaaaalllllyyyy particular about houmous - homemade is not acceptable, apparently.

Recently in Sainsbury's I saw a hijab-wearing lady of Middle-Eastern appearance having a look at the humous selection. I was interested to see which one she chose, thinking that her choice would likely be the best and most authentic. She eventually chose Sabra, which surprised me a bit as she was visibly Muslim. On the other hand, I can see why she chose it, Sabra is a cut above other supermarket humous. I wonder if there's a big difference between authentic Middle-Eastern humous and most of the stuff sold here. Typical supermarket humous in the UK is quite chunky. while humous from the Middle-East, such as Sabra from Israel and Kasih from Jordan, is much smoother in texture.

In ME everyone also has preferences. I had chunky as well as smooth ones.
Al Kasih is top though, the one with extra tahini.
But DH who is from ME happily eats basic chunkier asda one (the nice and thick one). We had both types in ME as well. Though the smoother one was much more popular. MIL prefers thicker drier one.
So personal preferences

I’m glad that I saw this post. I have a delivery from them tomorrow and they recommended Houmous to me when checking out.

I like Morrisons, my favourite is the red pepper but they are all nice. They are fairly thick and not runny.

Buy a jar of tahini. It lasts about 2,000 years.

Drain a tin of chickpeas and retain the liquid. Put the chickpeas in the blender with a generous tablespoon of tahini, half a garlic clove, roughly 2 tablespoons of f lemon juice, half the chickpea water and a similar amount of olive oil.

Whizz it up until smooth. If it won’t whizz it needs a bit more liquid so add a bit of each. Taste, add salt and adjust the flavours to suit your tastes (DS likes it lemony, DH likes it with cumin, DD likes it with roasted red peppers from a jar mixed through)

SwanFlight · 12/06/2025 20:51

We eat at least a jar of tahini a week. So 2000 years is a stretch. I find the shop bought hummus doesn't even bother with olive oil, tend to swap out for rape seed oil, or veg oil, skimp on the tahini etc. Sometimes padded out with other starchy stuff, and once it goes over, which seems to be quite soon, smells and tastes rank as.

Yes, I like the Morrisons jalapeño one and the whipped humous with paprika is good too. Not as good as the authentic ME brands, but good for supermarket’s own.

I am going through a big hummus phase at the moment so can't resist joining! I had Tesco hummus recently, and Asda hummus straight after and the difference was amazing. Tesco very bland, Asda zesty and rich. My favourite is coriander and lemon, but I can now only find it in Sainsbury's 😭
As a side note, Tesco do amazing sourdough in a few different flavours that go with hummus perfectly 😋

LawAndDisorderSeason3 · 12/06/2025 21:21

Just checked ASDA has 52% and tesco 41% chickpea. That makes difference!

dicdicnurse · 12/06/2025 22:00

Ramonas is hands down the best according to my lot!

Cominghomesoon · 13/06/2025 13:32

Make your own if you have a food processor - it's the best and simple to make
