I was shutting the bedroom door yesterday while my 1 year old walked beside me, not realising he’d grabbed the doorframe. He got his fingers caught as it closed and essentially ripped the tip of his pinky finger nearly clean off! I’ve never felt panic like it. There was so much blood. FIL drove us to A&E. It’s broken & ‘partially amputated”. He’s getting surgery on it tomorrow, under general anaesthetic 😭
I keep replaying it all in my head and the mum guilt is overwhelming. He’s been SO brave which helps and I know freak accidents like this happen but I just can’t shake the feeling that it was my fault. I’d love to hear any similar stories to help me feel better!

I clipped one of my DD’s fingernails way too short she she was a baby. I felt dreadful!

More recently, I failed to prepare her for the fact that her pre-school vaccinations would hurt a bit. I’d tried so hard to keep her calm and positive that I hadn’t explained what would happen, and she was horribly shocked by the needles. I still feel awful!

I guess if we didn’t feel bad, it would be worse!

Oh goodness OP that must have been horrible for you. Just remember and keep reminding yourself, it was an accident, you would never have done that on purpose and DS is far too little to remember it. Hope his surgery goes well.
Mine isn’t quite as dramatic, more comical really. I put DS in a time out and forgot about him. Went back to get him and he had fallen asleep on the naughty step. 🤣 was a bit hacked off that he had chosen to spend my one rare day off with him acting up after exemplary behaviour at nursery.

Oh you poor thing. These things do happen.
When I was a child my dad accidentally trapped my little finger in the car door. No harm done, incredibly! I don't remember it happening, but I do remember being given an ice cream to cheer me up!

Freak accident, please don't feel guilty
My DH trapped my 4 year olds finger in the door yesterday and the scream was heart breaking :(
Thanks to the shape of the door, it was just cut/scratched. Sounds like you've been very unlucky.

Thank you all so much for your kind words and sharing your stories. It’s made me feel loads better. I love this community ❤️

DS had his surgery today and all went well - now just need to work out how on earth we manage to keep the dressing dry! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Try not to blame yourself, accidents happen. When my son was one I fell down the stairs while I was holding him and broke his toe.

TheGriffle · 11/06/2025 22:40

I hope he recovers quickly, don’t beat yourself up, it was a complete accident and will soon be forgotten by him and any scar will become almost invisible as he gets older.

I trapped DD’s fingers in the bathroom door hinges, bruised them but they were ok then did the same thing a week later (she obviously didn’t learn not to put her hand there!) she cried out “Oh no! Not again!” Then burst into tears. I felt awful for 2 weeks straight!

Givemepickles · 11/06/2025 22:53

Hi OP, this exact thing happened to me when I was 2! My mum was closing the door and the tip of my pinky finger got almost fully nipped off. It was sewn back on fine and I have a small line where it happened. Also the white of my fingernail starts about half way up the nail instead of at the tip. I have absolutely no recollection of it happening but my mum has always felt awful about it. I forgave her and I'm sure your little one will too ❤️

Not me but my mother

My brother was laid,on his stomach in front of the fireplace, reading his annual

It was one of those with a tiled base that jutted out (he was resting his book on it)

My mother thought it would be funny to grab his foot and gently pull

She didn't know her own strength and pulled a lot harder than she thought she had

She smashed his face into the floor surround, broke a baby tooth, burst his lip wide open and gave him two whopping black eyes

For weeks afterwards,if anyone asked how he'd done it,he answered 'my mum did it...'

(Edited for typo)

Tipped the pushchair of my one year old over when I was getting on the bus. He was strapped in, thank god, but he did end up with most of one side of his face in the gutter. I picked soggy leaves out of his hair for most of the journey

To this day I dont know how I did it. It was like I lost power in my wrists and the whole event happened in slow motion and I couldn’t correct it. It gives me a cold sweat just thinking about it

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/06/2025 23:10

Op you can get cast covers to keep them dry. Hope he has a speedy recovery.
