Motorway Car Valuation

Georgieporgie29 · 10/06/2025 07:36

I’m looking to sell my car. The garage where I am buying my new one gave me a valuation of £8, I’ve just had a look at motorway valuation and they are giving an approx valuation of 9.5k.

I imagine this would be knocked down a bit as these companies always do but I was wondering does anyone have any experience with using them?

I can’t decide whether to get the guaranteed 8 or hold out for a bit more. Thank you.

Yes I do and my advice would be don't waste your time. I had an offer knocked down by 800 quid when the buyers turned up. They knew what they were doing. I was desperate to sell so just off loaded it. You will get car dealers bidding, who know what to bid you down on. Go with the 8K and do the trade in.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 10/06/2025 09:26

Hmm, £8 or £9.5k. It's a tricky one...

Georgieporgie29 · 11/06/2025 08:04

Thanks for that @Dangermoo. I did go through the process of uploading photos etc. and my price dropped to 8875. If there’s a chance they will drop it again then it seems pointless. I’ve decided to leave it on on the absolute slim chance of getting an offer within the next 48 hours with a view of taking it off on Friday and going with the dealers offer.

@Imlyingandthatsthetruth well yes of course, but my question was if they were likely to drop the price which they have already so it was worth the ask I think.

Motorway was a total faff and the guys who turned up had no ID, were quite unprofessional and insisted I let them test drive the car with the two of them as a lone woman. Then when I queried this I was accused of being paranoid. And yes they can haggle. It’s stressful. Trade in is FAR simpler.

Georgieporgie29 · 11/06/2025 08:28

@Confusedbylifeingeneral thank you, I’m thinking trade is the way forward here, I will be on my own as dh is working and I really can’t be bothered with all that pressuring.

Great, glad you're trading in. Enjoy your new car x

They knocked us down when we took it to them, the trader offers were low too.

Dangermoo · 11/06/2025 08:47

We Buy Any Car is worst for knocking you down.

Did they knock you down after you added the photos and then again when they came to collect?

There’s a big difference between we buy any car (will always knock you down) and motorway (where if you submit an honest report of condition & decent photos they should have no reason to knock you down).

I’ve sold through both & had no issues with the motorway transaction (WBAC knocked me down but I sold it anyway).

Good thing with motorway is they come to you, so if they try to knock you down you can send them on their way. WBAC you go to them, and if it is a fair distance you may feel like it isn’t worth the hassle to decline the new offer.

Good advice here. Just be careful @Georgieporgie29 because I made sure I had a male friend with me when my buyer and his mate came to buy my car. One reason being that he knows a lot about cars so could counter any trying it on. The other reason being the obvious one about safety x

Good point @Dangermoo thank you.

Thank you @SlipperyLizard thats really helpful.

Sorry, I was try to be funny because you said £8, not £8k. Wish I hadn't bothered now.

FWIW It's all luck of the draw on the day, when we changed cars a few months ago the dealer recommended we used Motorway because they would give us the best price, but in the end we played one dealer off aginst another and got a better trade in deal because we didn't want the uncertaintly of having either none or two cars at the same time to sort out. Money was one factor but convenience came into it too. Best of luck anyway.

Olinguito · 11/06/2025 12:23

I had a surprisingly good experience with WeBuyAnyCar, who were really pleasant to deal with. I was selling an old car and the guy was really positive about how well I had kept it, and the offer was fair.

uggmum · 11/06/2025 12:31

I sold my car through motorway. They gave me an excellent price and did not reduce it when they appraised the car

Georgieporgie29 · 11/06/2025 12:32

@Imlyingandthatsthetruth apologies, I read it wrong. Thanks for the info.

I just thought I’d give an update on this in case anybody finds the is thread at a later date and is wanting to know the outcome.

My car from the dealer was delayed so I decided to give motorway a go.

My car went into auction and the highest bid was £8370. I accepted this bid and then arranged collection.

The garage sent motorway to collect the car on their behalf due to distance. The motorway employee was here for 2 hours 😳 and inspected every inch of the car. He highlighted some things that I hadn’t disclosed (a few dots of rust on the roof that I wasn’t tall enough to see and could barely see when pointed out)

He sent all of his additional photos to the garage and spoke to them on the phone.

They rang me and gave me a revised offer due to extra things picked up 🙄 of £7800.

I said no as I had a higher offer locally, they asked what the offer was (put on the spot I said 8150) they went away, rang me back and agreed to match that price.

I decided to accept it because by this point I was just over it and it was slightly more than the local dealer but honestly never again.

I hope this helps anybody looking at this route, it probably depends a lot on the dealer/who inspects it etc. but I just found it an absolute pain.

Hi, thanks. Did they test drive it? They insisted with me.

Georgieporgie29 · 26/06/2025 06:53

@Confusedbylifeingeneral yes he did. He didn’t test drive it for long as when he got back he had to wait for his phone to finish counting down. It’s like it’s a set routine and they can’t move in to the next bit until they’ve completed the current bit iyswim?

Dangermoo · 26/06/2025 08:30

Glad you're sorted @Georgieporgie29 and that it went the way you wanted. Good for you, holding out for that price.

Thank you @Dangermoo and thank you for your advice earlier in the thread.
