After bills, nothing. I survive.

LandSharksAnonymous · 09/06/2025 15:06

I think better to ask what % as a portion of someone’s salary tbh, otherwise it makes no sense.

Once bills are paid, I have c. 60(ish)% of my salary left over. 30% goings into savings and then 30% on nonsense that I don’t need, like coffee.

But that 30% on nonsense could be £1K or it could be £150 depending on what my salary is, so quite a large difference

I wouldn’t waste 1k on nonsense a month
I’d give myself a sensible month that covered things like lunch out cinema
and then save the rest

A few hundred £

babystarsandmoon · 09/06/2025 17:09

I have £1200 ‘spare’ but I don’t spend anywhere near that.

Bodonka · 09/06/2025 17:16

Probably around the 1k mark? I break my budget down into much smaller chunks (eating out/weekend activities/clothes/gifts) but added up it’s about that. Does include stuff for DS though.

It’s a bit of an internal struggle for me because I know I could spend less, but I’ve struggled for money most of my life, save well, and am shallow enough to really just enjoy spending.

Midnightlove · 09/06/2025 17:18

About 4.5k as a household after bills/fuel/food

loobyloo1979 · 09/06/2025 17:18

About £700 after bills, food and fuel, but I soon burn through it!!

springintoaction321 · 09/06/2025 17:19

Between £200 and £400 , depending on what bills are due that month.

Louisetopaz21 · 09/06/2025 17:19

I have just over £1200 but I invest some of it and I use vinted for clothes etc my only vice is I buy a coffee every morning and perhaps a takeaway once a week.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 09/06/2025 17:20

Out of interest do you fill everyones ISAs then have surplus? Or is this £4.5k before putting aside an amount for savings.

No that's after pension but before any savings etc

BirdIsBoredOfFlying · 09/06/2025 17:29

My husband and I take £400 each as free spending money. I usually burn through mine (coffees, lunches when I’m in the office, clothes, etc) and he usually saves most of his and spends it in a lump sum (track days, camera equipment, etc). This is after bills, joint spending, saving and so on so there is other spare money, this is just our free to spend as we wish money, if that makes sense.

Whatnottoweartomorrow · 09/06/2025 17:38

£5 a week ...not really 'spare' but carved out of everything else so I can get lunch if I'm stuck out, or by things I need like clothes from vinted or save for make up etc.

zenae · 09/06/2025 17:50

Retired. 80% of my income after bills is disposable. I put a chunk into the holiday/travel fund, another chunk into the Christmas/Birthday fund and spend the rest on happy things. Time to rest, travel, eat, enjoy after many years from age 13 (yes part time) working, studying etc.

I don't have kids or live in partner, so that may explain things somewhat! I am lucky to have paid into a good pension scheme and have paid my house off. I had the bad days with debt, huge mortgage rates, unemployment for a time, caring for ill parents, strikes, you name it though.

I really enjoy spending too. Not so much on “stuff” as I’m quite minimalistic, but on travel, raves & festivals, self-care and eating out, definitely. I have a stressful job so like to make the most out of weekends and annual leave.

AffIt · 09/06/2025 19:25

After everything (bills, savings, subscriptions etc) about £350 pure 'ponies and sweeties' money.

I've been changing wardrobes this month (moving over from winter to summer) and have spent an annoying shitload on things like dry cleaning winter coats and putting winter boots and shoes into the cobbler's, which feels like unpleasantly practical use of ponies and sweeties money.

I normally spend it on nice wine and skin care.

GetOffTheCounter · 09/06/2025 19:30

Okay interesting question. Is it just to spend on me? or to spend on allocated but discretionary spending?

I put £50 a month into an account for christmas. I put £250 a month into holidays.

In theory that is £300 a month into discretionary but it is allocated.

Definitelynotem · 09/06/2025 19:32

I have about £2k spare after bills and subscriptions, food etc. and give myself £500 of this for personal spends and save the rest. Lifestyle creep is real though as I easily spend this every month!

MiddleAgedDread · 09/06/2025 19:34

very roughly a third each on:
essential bills and mortgage;
grocery shop, regular savings, gym membership and commute costs / petrol;
other stuff - mostly eating out, holidays, and any extra in savings.

notacooldad · 09/06/2025 19:38

About £2.5k once bill, food savings etc are paid. I usually spend a bit of it and add the rest into a savings account.

WhereHasMyPlanetGone · 09/06/2025 19:38

We allocate ourselves around £400 each but in reality don’t often spend it all.

Doobeedoobeedoobee · 09/06/2025 19:40

After bills, family spending ( most of our clothes, trips, eating and drinking out) and all saving, me and my partner have £100 a month each to literally fritter- I buy books and weird clothes, he likes having a flutter!
