Does anyone have a hot tub? 13amp or 32amp

We’re getting a hot tub for the garden in our new house and wondering if anyone has one and if they have a 13amp or 32amp power? Will a 13amp keep it warm enough whilst in use?
based in UK (North Yorkshire)

Yes.

13amp is fine.

springruns · 08/06/2025 21:55

Thanks @Octavia64, do you use yours often?

Not in the summer.

only had it since January.

i’m physically disabled and bought it after loving one at a holiday cottage. Really helps when the pain is bad.

also confuses the cats

The 32A will just heat up quicker than the 13A. Your electrician can advise on loadings if you opt for 32A, might tip you over if you have electric cooker and shower.

We are in Manchester and have a 13amp. It heats up I less than a day and is very warm. Sometimes if the weather is hot I end up turning it down. We have ours under a canopy so can sit in it and watch the rain coming down on the roof, it’s the best thing ever.

springruns · 09/06/2025 14:50

Thanks @Martyjakedo you use it in winter? Does it stay warm enough?

Yes, we do. 13amp, stays warm enough that we can only manage about 30mins before getting too hot - helps with DH psoriatic arthritis pain too.
use it at least once a week but switch it off Jan to March to help with the bills because it’s eye wateringly expensive 😅

TheaBrandt1 · 09/06/2025 18:03

Used it every pretty much every day for 7 years. Best buy ever.

13 and make sure you do not use and extension cable. Has to be either a properly fitted outside box that is waterproof or plugged directly into normal house sockets. This does limit where your tub will be able to be positioned.

Also insulation is key to leeping a temperature. Mats underneath and I use builders insulation roll under the lid and a lazy spa thermal cover. It can drop about 5 degrees per day if I don't keep it running. Usual warm up time equals 1°c per hour.

Look into correct chemical doses and how to up keep the water and filters. There are some good Facebook groups to give advice.

TheaBrandt1 · 09/06/2025 20:11

God knows an electrician did it

springruns · 09/06/2025 20:37

Thanks @SoberfuturesIf we go for the 13amp socket we’ll get an IP rated outdoor one and it will run off the garage socket circuits.

thanks for advice re maintenance I’ll join the Facebook groups

We don’t use it in the winter as I don’t like getting out in the cold air. 🥶 The hot tub is really warm though. We have had it for two years. Last year we paid for an air heat pump and added extra insulation. This cuts the electric costs.

North of the wall and 13 amp is fine, even in winter. My old one was fairly cheap and It would maybe drop by 1 or 1.5 degrees max in an hour or hour and a half. My new one is extremely well insulated and hardly drops at all.

AgathaX · 09/06/2025 20:57

We used to have one, 13 amp. We used it summer and winter and it was fine.
Got rid of it last year because it was very expensive to run all the time, and we also got a bit fed up with the constant maintenance for the water.

TheChosenTwo · 09/06/2025 21:04

Ours is 23amp but it’s quite a big tub, I think it can seat up to 10 people but for the most part I’m the only one that uses it.
I use it a lot, all year round, and it’s always hot and ready to go except when the weather gets really warm (rare!) and we drop
the temperature and make it a cold tub.
Love it, one of the best things we’ve bought.
I exercise a lot and it’s heavenly on fatigued muscles.

springruns · 09/06/2025 21:56

Thanks everyone it seems like 13amp will be fine. We’re only going to get 5/6 seater so hopeful 13amp will be okay
