Covid - when did your sense of taste return?

It has only been 5 days but I’m starting to worry it won’t come back. Lost 6lbs in weight as eating just isn’t enjoyable without being able to taste a thing!!!

About a week I think. I remember wanting to eat ALL the food when it came back.

Shelovesmilktray · 08/06/2025 22:43

3 weeks for me 😟

DoAhhDiddy · 08/06/2025 22:55

4 months one time for me 😭

socks1107 · 08/06/2025 23:00

It’s my smell that’s gone and it’s about 7 weeks. Hoping it’s back soon

spiderlight · 08/06/2025 23:35

I lost all taste and smell for three weeks. It came back gradually but fairly steadily over a few days after that. It was pretty miserable while it lasted though!

DifficultEggs · 08/06/2025 23:36

About three months, and fairly gradually.

Latenightreader · 08/06/2025 23:41

It was three weeks for me too, then a bit off and on for a couple of weeks more.

Fullofpudding · 08/06/2025 23:44

I caught it at Christmas and my taste came back towards the end of the April 😩

justasking111 · 08/06/2025 23:46

Six months for son. Came back in dribs and drabs.

INeedAnotherName · 08/06/2025 23:56

Taste came back after two weeks but not all of my smell has come back after a year.

Enko · 08/06/2025 23:57

6 month for ds for all taste to return. 2 weeks for smells

Manchesteruser · 09/06/2025 00:17

6 weeks I'm afraid. But it did eventually.

My mum lost her sense of taste & smell in the beginning of the pandemic. It's never come back. I guess she was just unlucky. Though it's had its silver linings occasionally. She can handle the grandkids nappies no problem!

Oh my days, how has she coped with that?
For those who have lost it, have you lost loads of weight? I can’t stand to eat. Appetite has disappeared!

Honestly, I make light of the positive side but she hates it. Everything tastes of nothing & she decides what to eat based on textures now.
Even strong smells, like coffee or garlic are nothing to her. It's definitely taken any enjoyment from eating away from her.
Mum has always been a fairly healthy eater so hasn't really affected her weight.
I think for her, its things like going out for a meal or birthday cake or a takeaway.... she just doesn't see the point in it anymore.

I think its pretty rare for it to never come back though.

About three months for me, and I got smell back before taste. At the time there was a big deal about "smell training" or something so I did that with essential oils (you could buy kits specifically for this purpose but I had lavender and tea tree in the house, and bought a citrus one) and it did seem to help.

Over the course of the three months I got food poisoning because DP was away and I couldn't smell or taste dodgy chicken (thanks, Hello Fresh) and also risked blowing up the house because I had gas belching out from the grill but it hadn't sparked up properly. Be careful!
