Is this a scam? Vinted seller sent wrong item

I bought an inexpensive (£4) item on Vinted. Opened the parcel to find something completely different and significantly more expensive if authentic.

I messaged the seller to say wrong item received, assuming she’d mixed up the labels. “I don’t sell those. Can you send me a picture?”

Sent picture via Vinted claim option.

”I’m afraid they gave you the wrong item. This is not my parcel.”

”it has my name and address on it”

”OK”

and then I received a return label via Vinted, saying the seller had agreed to cover return postage.

If this is a scam, how does it work?!

I had this happen to me once running up to Christmas - I got a £60 orange spray instead of some cheap leggings! Was it through Inpost lockers? They are rubbish, lost two of my orders and mixed up the above order all in the same month!

It was through EVRi and I picked up from the ParcelShop. I’ve read about that happening with InPost lockers though!

Who was the carrier? It’s common for Inpost to put the wrong labels on the wrong parcels when emptying the lockers and for people to receive the wrong item. In this case both the seller and the buyer have to raise an issue. Vinted will raise an issue with Inpost who will eventually declare the correct parcels as missing and you will both get paid.

If the seller has agreed to a return it sounds like they have mixed up the labels. It’s easily done if you have more than one parcel to post at the same time. You wouldn’t agree to a return if it wasn’t your item so I’d say the seller is just embarrassed at their mistake. You’ll get a refund eventually.

I initially assumed it was a parcel mixup but the seller’s instant response was “I don’t sell those”, as if there was no possibility she could have sent it.

I got a puffer jacket with a personal note in it, I checked the details and it had the address of my good friend who had posted a parcel to me at the same time , thing is I also got her parcel. She went to the post office but they were none the wiser, I think they often stick the wrong label on a parcel, mine was in December so a very busy time.

I was the seller this happened to. It's not a scam, just the seller is going to lose their parcel and their payment.

I sent 2 parcels on the same day, so assumed I'd mixed them up. I hadn't, they'd labelled someone else's parcel with my buyers details so they received a totally random item.

You'll get a refund once the seller receives the random parcel they've sent a shipping label for.

Basically I was told because I sent a shipping label instead of just raising an issue, I accepted it was MY fault, so my buyer was refunded, my actual parcel was lost forever and I also paid for a return shipping label of something I'd never seen before.

I'll buy many times over from Vinted but never sell again.

So who mixed up the labels? Was it a Vinted glitch or was it the carrier?

@drowsy it was InPost who mixed them up

mindutopia · 07/06/2025 21:54

I got the wrong Amazon parcel once. It was literally some random guy’s name, my address, and the wrong item.

The guy had a unique enough name that I was able to find him. He is in London and I’m in Devon.

I contacted the seller and they looked into it and somehow someone did the labels completely wrong. I got a huge pack of men’s tena pads. Bob McBobface in Ealing got 10 litres of pickling vinegar. I don’t know which of us was more shocked. The seller sent out the correct item after I complained. And I still have a month’s supply of tena for men somewhere. 😂

We ship out loads for our business and they often apply the labels when they collect the parcels and it’s amazing more doesn’t get screwed up.

This is why I always print my labels and stick them on my vinted sales myself!

drowsy · 08/06/2025 20:56

Thanks all. I’ve sent the item back at seller’s expense, hope to get a refund but still confused about what has happened Hmm

@drowsyyou can put the parcels in the inpost locker now with no label printed, you just get a QR code as the seller, and the person emptying the locker (I think) prints the labels and attaches them to the parcel. So what it seems happened is the person printing the labels has put them on the wrong parcels, your item will have gone to the person who bought what you got. Will be a completely different seller.

drowsy · 09/06/2025 07:59

Ah yeah, I can totally see that for inpost, but this was via evri and in my experience you print the labels yourself in the shop for that. If it’s not her parcel it might explain why she happily refunded postage, as this item is worth significantly more and she can just sell it on.

Our local post office prints the Evri labels for you - they probably just got mixed up.

Makes sense - thank you! Maybe I shouldn’t have been so honest, I could have kept it…

Update: I sent the item back and was refunded. A couple of days later I was picking up a different item from the ParcelShop and they told me there was another one waiting for me. The item I’d actually ordered! So it looks like an EVRi glitch. However, the seller was very happy to accept the much more valuable object back!!!
