Laundry powder or liquid?

Oh how Saturday nights have changed 😂

I have mild asthma and scented fabric conditioners can set it off (esp on my bedding). I have switched from scented shower gel to bar soap and my skin feels so much cleaner and less dry plus it's environmentally better.

I'm now looking at my laundry products and have heard that powder is better than liquid/pods. The pods sometimes don't dissolve.

I can't hang laundry outside as I have hayfever so I want a fresh (non-bio?) powder. I would love anything that smells of your laundry on holiday/hotel laundry!

I also have 2 sporty boys in the house so always washing!

Any tips?

I use Fairy non bio powder for years. Smells great, clothes are always clean and it has never caused a reaction to mine or DC’s very sensitive skin.

I used to find the clothes smelled bad with liquid detergent.

Powder gets clothes cleaner and doesn't make your washer smell.

I would have recommended Daz powder until this year but I think they've changed their formula and I can smell it more. It's a lovely nice clean smell but I personally think it's stronger than it should be. Either that or covid has buggered up my nose.

I prefer powder, liquid for me doesn’t seem to clean thoroughly. I’m old enough to miss Ajax powder cleaner, it was brilliant!
Also cardboard boxes are more environmentally friendly.

Powder every time.

HundredPercentUnsure · 07/06/2025 19:59

Definitely powder. If you do a smaller load you can change the dose of powder appropriate for your washing - can't do that with capsules!

I always use powder - it’s cheaper than pods, I can measure how much I actually need instead of “one size fits all” and it dissolves properly. At the moment I’m using Fairy because it gets things clean and it’s very lightly scented - once dry my clothes smell of nothing particular, just clean, which is what I want.

Does anyone know if you can still get the power tablets anymore? I’d like to use powder, but the loose stuff gets everywhere.

I can’t find the tablets anywhere!

I only use fairy non bio powder. Absolutely love it. Gets clothes clean & smells lovely too.

Fairy non bio liquid. We had blocked drains for ages when I used powder. Plumber said that washing powder solidified in drains, and Aldi is the worse for this. Haven’t had a problem since switching. Gets washing clean, smells lovely.

Sainsburys do 2-in-1 bio laundry tablets.

Non branded non bio liquid here. Coop is the least scented, I think. Of the branded non bios the best for dealing with sweaty teenage laundry is Persil, the one that is ok is Fairy. Powder makes me sneeze. Pods are ok but it's too much product. I always use far less than they say

I receive emails from ''Better Report''. Today they had an item on laundry pods. It is difficult to know sometimes whether they really are down on something to flog us something else. Below is a paste of today: I would like to have opinions.

The Downside of Laundry Pods
To the naked eye, laundry pods seem to dissolve, but many of their harmful microplastics linger long after you’ve washed your clothesEach laundry pod is made of a water-soluble synthetic polymer called polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), designed to hold in liquid and soap before entirely dissolving in the wash. However, researchers have found that 75% of leftover plastics from laundry pods travel down the drain, making their way into the public water supply. Traces of PVA materials have been found in fish and even human breast milk, and pods are a definite contributor to this problem.
Laundry pods are also more expensive than liquid and powder detergents sometimes costing up to 50% more per load. While this may be just a few cents each time, those costs can quickly add up on a strained household budget — especially when you can’t control the amount of detergent you’re using each time as you can with liquid or powdered soaps or use it for other purposes, like spot treating stains.

Am about to try the bower collective powder op

WinterCarlisle · 30/09/2025 07:26

Surf tropical powder: I’m quite allergic (narrows eyes at persil) and smell sensitive (narrows eyes at perimenopause). Gets clothes clean, fresh smell that isn’t overpowering. I HATE the smell of any of the liquid pods and find Fairy really cloying. Don’t mind the Aldi, or is it Lidl, lavender powder either.

I use an Eco Egg (https://ecoegg.com/) & it’s great, just needs refilling after every 70 washes or so.

LillyPJ · 30/09/2025 07:36

I always choose non-bio powder. Non-bio because the other sort irritates my skin and brings DS out in a rash. Powder because it's more environmentally friendly - less plastic, much cheaper to transport, uses less water in manufacturing. I don't choose a scented product and get a fresh smell by drying clothes outside if possible.

What is it? I got page not found when I clicked on the link. I just stocked up from Costco with the liquid pods but will try others when they are finished.

Have you noticed in the new ads the woman is dressed in the same colours as the product? All pink and blue.
