I don't really drink these days, but when I did, I chose port, which can get out of hand very quickly!
My worst ever experience was after stupidly consuming a full bottle over the length of an evening, after a very light dinner
I recall not being able to sleep at all, waking very few minutes. I had drunk a pint of water, but something kept urging me to go to the kitchen and get a glass of cordial in sparkling water. On the way downstairs I had a horrible panic attack, or possible low blood sugar attack, where I went into a cold sweat, shakes, etc.
After drinking the cordial I was fine.
Can only imagine the electrolytes and minerals in the drink may have helped restore me, and my body had just known ordinary water wouldn't do.
Happened again a few hours later, so stupidly made 4 double rounds of toast with mayo and cheese which left me with horrific heartburn and reflux.
Day after I felt nauseous for over 8 hours straight but could not puke.
I had awful, painful IBS and inflammation which lasted the rest of the week, and has bitten my nails right down to bleeding (I am a recovering nail biter and that set me back by months).
On top of that, I was severely depressed, anxious and bad tempered until the damn stuff finally left my system.
This was when I realised that any kind of boozing, after the age of 45, wasn't working for me. I only used to have around 8 units per week generally, but those occasional blow outs were unpredictable, long lasting and brutal.
The good thing was losing a good bit of weight without trying after cutting it out, so there's that!
