Nicest pod style coffee?

BigBoysDontCry · 07/06/2025 13:54

Want to buy adult DS a small coffee pod type machine for his birthday.

I don't drink coffee so no idea what ones would be viewed as nice. I appreciate it's probably an individual taste type of thing but a general concensus would be good Grin

For background he usually just has those instant sachets of cappuccino or mocha or drinks any instant chilled coffee things. I think his taste is probably pretty basic.

He doesn't really go out very much to have like a favourite coffee shop or anything. I just don't want to pick something disgusting.

Thanks for any advice.

Grind or Pact have a good reputation though I haven’t tried their pods

Oh sorry just saw you wanted a pod machine not the pods

The Sage pod machine is good, my parents have one and it does a nice job. It looks good too which a lot of them don’t!

Genuine Nespresso brand pods taste so much nicer than any of the non branded ‘Nespresso type’ pods and I say this as someone who buys a lot of dupe food items from Aldi and Lidl.

Having said that, my lovely Magimix Pixie Nespresso pod machine recently croaked so I use an Aldi Nespresso type coffee pod machine but with actual Nespresso pods. The Aldi pods don’t taste as good.

You could set him up with a basic monthly Nespresso pod subscription if you’re feeling particularly generous. 😊

I've got a multi way one that fits the old style Nespresso pods, Dolce Gusto and ground coffee. I loved the flexibility but 99% of the time just use the Nespresso style ones.
What's good about those is as the patent ended loads of different companies now make ones that fit the machines. If he doesn't have any brand loyalty, that might work for him as he could try pods from Lidl through to independent coffee companies.

Ah right thanks, yes I'm looking for a machine too but thought it best to start with what pods are nice as presumed I'd then need the matching machine.

He's difficult to buy for so happy to consider a subscription or something. He's autistic so a creature of habit and has one every afternoon but no more or less... 😁

I’ve got a Nespresso Citiz machine which I love. I agree with others who say that the cheap supermarket pods aren’t as good as the more expensive ones. My favourite is Starbucks Pike Place Roast which I get on an Amazon subscribe and save and pay around £30 for 100 pods.

minipie · 07/06/2025 14:14

Ah you definitely don’t need the matching machine and pods. The pods are all the same shape (Nespresso did the originals and everyone copied/wanted to be compatible ) and the pod machines are all designed to take that shape.

There are one or two exceptions that take a different shape (tried to be nespresso rival) but pretty rare these days.

BigBoysDontCry · 07/06/2025 14:19

Thanks for that everyone. I didn't realise as I've never really looked into it before. That's really useful so I guess I can just see what deals I can pick up in terms of a machine and I'll try a little variety of pods to see what takes his fancy. Sounds like nespresso would be a safe place to start as a basis and then maybe see what else is out there.

We have a basic old style Nespresso machine and although I haven’t tried all of the Nespresso pods I wasn’t overly keen on the ones I did try. I find I prefer the Cafe Nero pods for the machine. So it’s definitely a matter of personal taste. DS only likes the Starbucks Caramel pods.

minipie · 07/06/2025 14:23

Have a look at reviews for machines as there’s quite a big variation in performance

If he likes cappuccino I suggest getting one that can froth milk too. Or a separate milk frother.

BigBoysDontCry · 07/06/2025 14:26

He's not great at letting you know his preference tbh, I usually just have to work out based on what he uses up the quickest but that doesn't always work as he's pretty diligent at going by the use by/best before dates and obviously is only selecting from whatever I've chosen in the first place.

It will be an experiment at the least.

Yes he likes frothy so that's a good shout.

Just to say the capsules/pods for Tassimo are a different shape to nespresso.

BigBoysDontCry · 07/06/2025 14:44

Thank you, that's good to know 😊
