Is anyone else completely unable to blowdry and style their own hair?

I just want a big boucy blowdry a la Cindy Crawford in the 90s. I know my hair can do that because hairdressing colleagues have done it for me. I know I am capable of doing it on other people, I used to work in a blow-dry bar and was able to whip even the finest, scraggliest mop into a stunning halo of big bouncy curls with only a blow dryer, a round brush, and some product, occassionally I would have to reach for the velcro rollers and tongs, but not often.

Yet, I cannot do it on myself. I've watched YouTube videos of both professionals and non-professionals and followed along even with the ones that make me cringe because they get the technique so wrong, even with bad technique and the wrong products, they still get a better result than me. So I copy and make the mistakes they make and still end up with flat, pin straight hair.

What am I doing wrong?

GHD blow dry brush! I’m a lifelong incompetent hair styler and this has changed everything. Bouncy sleek hair in 10 mins from wet to dry.

I bought a Babyliss Big Brush for my DD , she hated it
She gave it back to me , I tried it a few times but it tangled my hair and difficult to unwind and release my hair from.

My hair grew back wavy after a massive post illness hair loss , it is very fragile so I daren;t risk anything that could catch it now .

I think the soft rollers would be a good bet for me .

I bought a cheap heated brush on Look Fantastic and it's amazing! Never had such good hair

I feel so much better now at not being able to do my own hair. If you, as a trained hairdresser, can't do it, how on earth can I be expected to? Thank you.

So do I! I could spend 45 minutes on it and it looks no different to when I started.

camelfinger · 08/06/2025 19:58

Same here. But it’s easier for a hairdresser because aside from their experience, they are drying it from an angle that won’t introduce frizz and won’t make their arms ache from reaching up and behind. Plus even the best blow dries take absolutely ages for a hairdresser to do on my hair. I don’t have time or the inclination to spend 45 mins drying my hair when it’s not going to last. So I’m resigned to the messy look.

I can achieve a beautiful bouncy blow dry with the Dyson Airwrap. I’m very pleased with the results! I’ve never been able to blow dry my hair well before.

Thelostjewels · 08/06/2025 22:00

Is the ansa to brush it wet and product and then heated rollers?

Portakalkedi · 08/06/2025 22:04

I would need 3 hands to blow dry. Prefer rollers!

Wash and dry hair upside down for volume. Brush through and then scrape old fashioned mouse through and section off in to large velcro rollers. Leave for a good stint. Remove and you will have a big bouncy style hair. I sometimes leave them in all day if i have an event.

I thought I was alone in this! I gave my hairdryer away as I didn’t really use it. Now I have another one and I’m thinking of taking it to my hairdresser and paying her to teach me how to style my hair! I’ve tried with curling irons and such but I just end up curling the bits I can ‘see’ and getting bored about doing the back of my head so it ends up flat.

LoafofSellotape · 09/06/2025 23:04

Revlon One Step is what you need.

I love my babyliss big hair and it is the only thing that works for me. My hairdresser can’t stand them 😂but for me on myself, it’s the best i can do and I’ll take that!

downtownlights · 09/06/2025 23:13

Also second the mousse, it is the only thing really gives bounce - everything else just smooths

Corknut · 09/06/2025 23:34

For all those with frizzy unmanageable hair get a kerasilk smoothing treatment - my hair was like wire wool, I now barely have to do anything and it’s lovely and smooth for days! Game changer!

Huckleberries · 10/06/2025 21:39

@Corknut I looked this up and it looks really good

I think I'm gonna have to phone round all the local salons because the salon finder is telling me that absolutely no one does it. Which I find hard to believe.

Were you in the salon for hours?

I don't want my curls to fall out. I'm looking at the prices and wondering if it's actually better to have a blow dry every time I need to look nice but I suppose that's even more time consuming!

Huckleberries · 10/06/2025 21:40

@Corknut also does it have that awful smell and fume problem?

greengreyblue · 10/06/2025 21:45

Mi e is naturally wavy and curly . I have it cut in a blunt , one length , long bob. I towel dry it then blow dry upside down while brushing. This gives it volume and also straightens it a lot. Then I use my Cloud 9 straighteners to put waves that I want in. But my hair is bit wild if left to dry naturally so body is not an issue,

greengreyblue · 10/06/2025 21:46

Also Aldi’s dupe of Wow anti humidity spray is good for fighting frizz.

Sidebeforeself · 10/06/2025 21:48

@GivingUpFinally what is a profile section? My problem is I cant work with mirrors I.e. doing things the opposite to ow they look and cant do the back of my hair at all
