Do you think Robert Thompson is truly rehabilitated?

As we all know, James Bulger was a two-year-old boy from the UK whose tragic abduction and murder in 1993 shocked the world. Taken from a shopping center by two ten-year-old boys, John Venables and Robert Thompson, his death became one of the most harrowing and widely known cases in modern British history. To this day, nearly everyone who hears his name knows the heartbreaking story and the profound impact it had on public consciousness and the justice system.
both boys were released after serving 8 years, when they turned eighteen. John Venables returned to prison twice for possessing CSAM. He is currently still in prison.
I personally think Venables is sick and can’t be “cured” of his attraction to kids. He will always reoffend imo, even if his devices etc are taken away. He needs to stay in prison. He’s also allegedly revealed his identity and needed several new identities costing the taxpayer even more. I know you get all this “stop it now” therapy- I just don’t think pedophiles can be cured. It’s like trying to do conversion therapy on a straight person.
I don’t know how I feel about Thompson- he committed a heinous murder, but did his time in custody. He’s never reoffended and now allegedly lives with a partner who knows who he is. Can’t remember if he has children. From studying this case, it always seems like he was deemed the ring leader, yet he is the one who has cleaned himself up and stayed out of trouble.

I know poor James' mum will never get over his death. I cant imagine the mixed feelings she must have, she likely thinks it was wrong for either boy to be released so young.
I can’t say I’d be too thrilled about Thompson moving into my area if that’s the case, but truthfully I think if he’s done his time he needs to be left alone now to live his life . But that’s probably a wildly unpopular opinion- because James will never get to live his life.

I think Venables has compromised his own identity by telling people who he is etc. I sincerely hope that if that happens again, he’s told to face up to it. He wouldn’t last a day. Shame.

He’d be given unlimited new identities though, because we couldn’t possibly let this freak face up to his own actions.

I heard that happening anyway. I would presume they (and people like Maxine care) have either changed significantly from childhood in the boys case, or had loads of plastic surgery.

His name was James not Jamie.

A guy called Scott Bradley was mistaken for one of them. Killed himself.

His mum also called referred to him as Jamie as a nickname sometimes.

Sure, but I mean if their actual identities were released, or just RT since I think JV is still in prison, that would obviously inspire a new wave of attacks against people unfortunate enough to share a similar combination of name, appearance and area.

If RTs name has been changed, it's presumably to something quite common, because it would be much easier for him to hide as something akin to Mark Johnson or Steve Williams than a name that only gets one match on google. And he'll still be a middle aged white bloke with naturally brown hair. There will be a lot of people ticking both of those boxes.

That’s awful. He looks nothing like either. So many men have receding hairlines/shaved heads and the same colour eyes. Doesn’t mean they’re Thompson.

Is she rehabilitated? Just because she hasn’t reoffended yet. Doesn’t mean she doesn’t have a predisposition to violence and won’t offend again one day.
She’s clearly a very disturbed individual, how can you treat that? I’ve no idea. She was a sadist. Would you let her look after your baby?

I actually have not read a whole lot about the case, I was just curious if you thought the same about all child killers, or it was just about the Bulger case.

Wikipedia says they’ve both lost their Scouse accents too. The accents were gone before they were released.

Wonder if they had literal speech lessons to change their accent, or if the parole board gave that information falsely.

That’s believable. I’m Scottish and lost my Scottish accent at around 6 years old when I started school in England. I moved back to Scotland at 13 and my Scottish accent never returned. I’m 30 and still sound like I’m from Cambridge. So it happens without speech lessons, especially at a young age.

Yep, horrifying. One reason why it wasn't actually a good idea to release their identities to the public. The ramifications of that decision have already indirectly contributed to one death and there's plenty of time for there to still be others. Either or both could have another 50 years left in them.
