Hate my work and always have!

I hate my job. I hated my previous job. It's in a corporate environment. I've never felt at home in any role. You wouldn't know, I play a good game and say and do the right things. I'm sad about it. I've had 2 credible career changes. Money and benefits are good. I could leave and take less money elsewhere but I'm terrified I won't enjoy that either!! Sorry such a negative post but really wanted to vent. Is there anyone else like me out there?

Leave the job. Change your environment. Learn from the things that you did not enjoy before and transform them into a tangible idea that you will be able to both enjoy and benefit from.

I have always just assumed it’s normal to hate your job!

SausageMashBeans · 23/06/2025 20:39

Yes me OP! I’m so miserable in my current role I really want to just go and hand my notice in but know I shouldn’t without another job lined up! I have no clue what I want to
do as a career which I find a real struggle!

OP, That's awful. You can't spend the rest of your life doing something you hate. It will take a terrible toll on your mental health.

I joined an industry straight from university. Not the right job but a reasonably well paid place to be. Then I moved job every two years gradually to a function I did enjoy but in the same industry.

Now I'm in my 60s, I have moved into a different industry but doing the same job and it means I have a 10 minute rural commute. I work in a nice company with nice people doing an interesting job.

You have to keep trying new things until you find something you love. Keep changing by little increments.

Yumchips · 26/06/2025 03:05

I think you're right about continuing to move regularly. It's a bit stressful because I have a tendency to want to get comfortable but I know that won't get me a role I might like if I don't keep moving.

This is easier said and done in the market today. How would you find something else better?

As my dad used to say 'if it was fun they wouldn't have to pay you'

Would self-employment be an option? I do think some people find it harder than others to be employees. I know several people who gave up their jobs to become self-employed dog walkers, bakers, soap makers etc. It's a risk of course, so it isn't for everyone either.
I struggle with the whole business of making a living tbh! This aggressively capitalist society simply doesn't suit me. I wish we had UBI so I could spend more time being creative, rather than exhausted from low paid hard work.

Notmyrealname22 · 26/06/2025 06:08

Same! I resigned today due to feeling this way. 3 years in this job. No next job lined up. Just broken & needing a break. In tears when telling people at work about it. I’ll be taking 3 months off to figure out what’s next.

I’ve been reflecting recently. I’ve been working for 32 years now. I have changed jobs, roles, titles, industries and countries. I’ve had 3 separate careers. Almost all office based, with one part-time after school job in retail, and a first full time job in hospitality that I hated the most. In pretty much every single job, I eventually hate it given enough time. Sometimes that’s one year, sometimes it’s 3 years. But I don’t think I’ve gone longer than 3 years without ending up hating the job and looking for the next thing. I hear you on the thinking about it being a risk that even if I take a pay cut I will end up hating the job anyway, and thinking it’s probably not worth it. If I could retire tomorrow, I would do it in a heartbeat.

No answers, just solidarity that you are not alone in feeling this way.

Not sure any of these jobs would pay the bills…

I work in the arts, freelance. Money stress is real.

Friends love hearing about my work, but I’m the only one who doesn’t own a house, run a car, have a pension, or holidays.

We can only afford one child. I’m happy, but not secure.
