Apologies for the poor photo. Best I could get ‘on the fly’. Any ideas? Thank you!

Gosh that’s going to be tricky from that photo! I find this time of year if I think I’ve spotted something really rare it generally isn’t, it’s just a fledgling (and hence looks different as it doesn’t have its adult plumage yet).

PickAChew · 04/06/2025 12:56

Coal tit?

smallglassbottle · 04/06/2025 13:00

Female bullfinch perhaps?

Karatema · 04/06/2025 13:02

What area of the country is this? It will make identification easier.

SnakesAndArrows · 04/06/2025 13:03

How big is it, say in relation to a blackbird or bluetit?

Female bullfinch perhaps?

Yes, I agree. It's got a finch type bill and its colours and markings look like a female bullfinch to me.

AnchorWHAT · 04/06/2025 13:37

Looks like a young bullfinch to me

Daffodils9 · 04/06/2025 13:39

In the southwest. Yes, I was wondering about maybe young female bullfinch. It’s was really pale around the back of the neck and down the back which is a bit baffling.
Size of a puffed up robin if that makes sense?!

We’re very rural and do get surprisingly rare visitors sometimes.

@Daffodils9

Blue Tit?

Gundogday · 04/06/2025 14:50

Springwatch is on. You can send photos directly to them. Ask them to identify it.

Newdoggo · 04/06/2025 14:53

Get the Merlin app and see if it identifies it

TonTonMacoute · 04/06/2025 15:49

I would say definitely juvenile bullfinch, probably female - I don't know when the males develop their bright cherry front.

Beautiful birds, we get them in our garden but they are difficult to tempt into the open.

Sometimeinadifferentworld · 04/06/2025 18:10

My first thought was bullfinch but I'm definitely not an expert.

Brilliant App 👍

possibly a willow/marsh tit but can’t really judge the size of it 🤔
Not a bullfinch I have them everyday at our feeder, they have a white rump but no white on the back. Juveniles also don’t have the black head til they mature.
another thought maybe a blackcap but I’ve never seen one, they clearly don’t like where I live 😬

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 04/06/2025 20:02

It's a bullfinch.

TonTonMacoute · 04/06/2025 20:06

Not a black cap, they don't have white on the back (or anywhere really).

This is the pic of bullfinches in my book (female on the left, juvenile on the right)

I'm not familiar with the Willow tit but having seen your post and googled it and looked at the images I think you could be right.

DontTouchRoach · 04/06/2025 21:16

Whatever it is, I think it’s a juvenile, so might be hard to identify if you’re comparing it to adult birds.

Sometimeinadifferentworld · 05/06/2025 09:12

I asked my son his opinion as he is very interested in birds.
He suggested possibly a Pied Flycatcher.
I see they are summer visitors to the UK.

If it comes back can you try for a clearer picture
