All night I've been awake on the toilet as I have a constant urge to pee and it's just trickling out and burning. I sat in a warm bath for an hour and it hasn't helped. I've drank almost 3 litres of water and I still feel awful - the constant urge to pee and it burning is breaking me! Please help or provide an advice. I need to get up soon with my toddler and get him ready for nursery and I feel like i cant move off the toilet !

I have heard taking a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water helps. Hope you feel better soon.
Edited tp add a link about cystitis

Call 111. You need urgent antibiotics. They might prescribe over the phone and you can go pick up from out of hours pharmacy.

Rafting2022 · 04/06/2025 06:08

You can buy cystitis sachets at the supermarket - take a couple and it will soon give you a relief.

Poor you. Short term, avoid drinking caffeine and anything acidic as it will only make the burning feeling worse. You can get antibiotics from some pharmacies now without a prescription from a GP too, if you can’t get a GP appointment. Hope you feel better soon.

My mum swears by bicarbonate of soda mixed with water. At the first signs of cystitis she makes a pint of it and drinks it over the next couple of hours. She's 89 this year and it's always worked for her. It might at least help until you can get to a pharmacy.

piscofrisco · 04/06/2025 06:24

I also reccomend bicarbonate in water. But I doen pints of it as needed, rather then sipping over a few hours. Can you get a whoosh delivery or similar of the cystitis sachets from Tesco? They taste grim but do help. You can do boots online for the antibiotics. (Or Superdrug). Paracetamol for pain and fever.

caffelattetogo · 04/06/2025 06:27

Bicarbonate of soda in the bath too. Sit in it for as long as you need.

Pharmacy first scheme should be able to prescribe antibiotics this morning.
Buy Phenazopyridine from Amazon- will be here tomorrow but useful to keep in.

Try not sitting on the loo for hours. You need to save the wee up for a substantial go. Sorry you’re experiencing this. It can be excruciating.

BettyEagleton · 04/06/2025 08:31

You don’t need a prescription for the antibiotics now. You can just go and get them from Boots or wherever - the pharmacist can prescribe them. Nothing else will work. Hope you’re okay.

I am plagued by UTIs and my (slightly sneaky) top tip if this happens to you is to go to two pharmacies, get two lots of antibiotics and keep one for next time. Having a supply means when I inevitably start with symptoms on a Friday evening or a bank holiday or the night before my friend’s wedding (true story) I can just start on the antibiotics right away.

Then I get more and refill my stash!

I used to get it now and then and always found that the sachets you can buy in supermarkets now (cystitis relief) helped very quickly. Best if you can take them at the very first signs. I always keep some in, and never go away without a supply - esp. after one holiday ruined because I didn’t have any and couldn’t buy any locally. That was the only time I needed to see a GP for ABs once home.

My local Asda stocks them, and I dare say any supermarket or pharmacy will have them.

piscofrisco · 04/06/2025 11:33

I take D Mannose daily which is supposed to help prevent reoccurrence.

Leabee1234 · 04/06/2025 12:28

Thanks so much everyone. I went to chemist at 9am and got some antibiotics nitrofurantoin I think they're called. Which have helped within a few hours ! However they've made me feel quite drowsy and unwell but I'd rather feel drowsy than the UTI. It has calmed down. It was hell! X

Nitro thingummibob makes me feel so ill I think I'm dying. If you continue to feel terrible call your GP / 111 / go back to the pharmacist -- there are other options. Glad you are feeling better, though OP.

SunnieShine · 04/06/2025 13:41

Get the cranberry sachets. I get UTI's a lot so keep a stash handy. A couple of those will see you right until you can get your hands on antibiotics, which you can get over the counter for a UTI. Or go to Boots for both.
