Oven not working

GlassPerm · 03/06/2025 14:49

I cooked a pizza last night. I had it in for about 15 minutes. It did look paler than what my cooking usually is. I usually burn things. But I was mindful of the clock and got it out. It was hot.

I tried to cook a chicken earlier today. I put on the oven to preheat and after about 10 minutes then red light was still on butInput my chicken in. I set the timer for an hour to come back and take the bag off. It was a cook in the bag chicken. It just didn't cook and the oven wasn't hot.

I was able to put the chicken into the slow cooker and let it cook there.

Since the. I tried to see if the oven would get hot but it never did.

I am cooking on the hob too. So I can't turn it off.

Would it work later if I was to to turn off for a while and then turn it back on again.

The fan worked in the oven.

Is the clock set on it? Sometimes if there’s a power cut and the clock resets to 12:00 then the oven won’t work til the time is changed.

Either that or the element is broke.

Sounds like your heating element is broken

Super easy to fix - you can buy the heating element part on eBay and then search on YouTube as to how to remove and replace the old one

I'm a novice and have managed it a few times x

Ilovemyshed · 03/06/2025 15:14

Thermostat or element needs replacing.

LIZS · 03/06/2025 15:15

Either heating element or thermostat is faulty. The hob might work separately.

GlassPerm · 03/06/2025 15:48

No there wasn't a power cut. I think the power was turned off quickly to the oven earlier though. So maybe it's a power thing. The clock was not set but I did change it there.

I don't know if that will work.

How come it worked last night but then not today

OP posts:
GlassPerm · 03/06/2025 15:49

Will I just give it a break and leave it turned off for a while and see if it works later

Things burn out, although it might have tripped a fuse if so. Have you checked the clock and timer settings as I have known an oven not switch on when they are out of sync or it thinks it is on a delayed start.

mathanxiety · 03/06/2025 16:07

No, don't do that.

Your element or thermostat may need replacing.

YY to fuse problems.

I had it all powered off for an hour approx.

Just turned it on again. The fan is working but there is no heat in the oven.

Is there a grill? If so see if that heats up, otherwise elements have gone.

Lavendersong · 03/06/2025 18:09

Ive changed the element in my oven 4 times now. I had to borrow a torq ?!? Screw head from a neighbour the first time. It looks like a star and is called T20 I believe.

it’s easy to do yourself actually if a bit of a pfaff the first time but the part is only £10 so I’m happy to keep doing it myself whilst I can.

For the oven to then work you have to set the time on the oven

Lavendersong · 03/06/2025 18:10

Remember to take photos of where the wires etc go

Vse500 · 03/06/2025 19:08

It’s not an indesit is it? Mine did exactly the same. Had new element, temperature gauge, a few parts and never found the problem. Had to just replace it. Was only 4yrs old.

They don't heal themselves OP. Your oven needs a repair.

Frugalgal · 03/06/2025 19:31

Most likely thing is the element is gone. You can get a new one for about £20 and they're easily fitted.

Sonia1111 · 03/06/2025 19:39

As others have said, reset the clock. You don't have to set it accurately, but if the power was cut then the oven won't work until you "reset the clock".

Are you saying the stove works but not the oven? That is normal for our stove when the power is cut. Our stove top is gas and the oven electric.

StinkerTroll · 03/06/2025 19:50

We had this issue a couple of weeks ago, we discovered that it worked fine if you just put it on heat not fan setting (we were then able to order a new fan element and is now working fine)

JaneGrint · 03/06/2025 19:56

I’m seconding pp’s who’ve said that the most likely explanation is that your oven’s heating element has broken.

We’ve had our oven’s heating element break partway through cooking things before - if something like that happened to yours it would explain why your pizza didn’t look as well done as you expected last night.

When your power went off briefly did you have to reset any trips in your fuse box? Sometimes when ovens break it’ll trip the fuse box.

Also our oven has separate heating elements for the grill and fan oven, plus our hob is separate from the oven bit, so one bit of your cooker working as normal doesn’t necessarily rule out a broken oven heating element.

If it is broken then it’ll need to be replaced, it won’t get better if you turn the oven off at the wall and on again, or if you leave the oven turned off for a while. If you’re not confident replacing bits yourself then you’ll need to hire someone to fix it.

AliceDownTheRabbitHole · 03/06/2025 21:16

This happened to us about 15 years ago. It turned out that there was a cannabis farm behind pur house and they were syphoning off electricity! As soon as it got busted, the oven was fine again. Our lights also flickered. This probably isn't your issue though 😂

dogcatkitten · 03/06/2025 21:30

If the other bits of the cooker work, it's the oven element probably, you should be able to find a replacement and fix yourself, google is your friend! You can try turning off and on again it's really surprising what things might need re-booting these days, my freezer and washing machine needed re-booting to 'fix' them recently (separate days, separate problems). Make sure you unplug, or turn off at the fuse board and leave a few minutes before turning back on, crazy.
