Can you help me with my awful nits question?

I found a single bug in my little girl's hair (no itching, was just stroking her hair to sleep and found it which is a whole other horror story). I panicked, bought the hedrin once lotion and treated all of us yesterday. She and I had about 4 bugs each, the rest of the family clear but I treated them anyway. I combed her again today and found about 6 eggs but no lice. About to check mine now.

Question 1: should I keep combing us both every night?

Question 2: does the fact I still found eggs mean the treatment hasn't worked and I should do it again? If so, when? I would definitely treat if I found live lice but I'm not sure about the eggs.

Question 3: I liked the hedrin and it was pretty drama free but is it the best option?

I've been itching LIKE MAD at work and avoiding everyone, this is horrible!!

It’s been a while for my household… but get a nit comb ( pharmacy wil have then)— slather hair with conditioner and comb them out from the roots.Loads of conditioner! Just get a cheap kind. I used to put my kids in the bath and put some music on and comb through. Get an old towel/ kitchen paper and wipe the conditioner on it.. you might see more than you expect!
i never found the lotions any good… and they stink.

Good luck!

Thanks! I'm going to try that now on me.....

Hedrin once and repeat weekly until nit comb is clear.

I follow the NHS guide for when to comb out. Had always worked and I use a nit comb and conditioner: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/head-lice-and-nits/

nhs.uk

Head lice and nits

Find out how to spot head lice, how to get rid of them and how they spread.

Agree re the conditioner and a nit comb it was the only thing that finally ended it for us

Me too.

As a teacher, I had them too. ( oh…the perks of the job…😀)

I treat with a lotion, left it on ALL night, and they were still running when I combed my hair over the bath the next morning. 😱

Least it gave my ( not known at the time, adulterous husband an excuse to ‘sleep in the spare room’…🤔🙄)

Comb and keep combing ( with conditioner). This is about breaking the cycle of the nits laying and hatching.

It took me three weeks of combing every night ( recommended or not) my very thick, long hair.

(EDITED to say ‘ apologies, far too much information 😂)

@ThoughtAbout that's a truly terrible story. The live live i mean, not the husband!!!

I've just used half a bottle of aldi conditioner and have got possibly 2 eggs out of mine. Will keep going, that MHS page is a good guide to timings. I'm.delighted not to see any lice today and all the ones we combed out yesterday were dead so maybe this is going to be ok and I dont have to shave everyone's heads.

I am quite shocked though - it's presumably happened over half term and we haven't really seen anyone except at parks and cinema and things....I guess they are just really infectious!!

Yes combing every night for atleast 2 weeks
Nit killer lotion and then 7 days reoeat

My DD had then about a month ago - it’s a pain in the arse. Now she’s nit combs with every hair wash and had to have her hair in a bun for school

Cheffymcchef · 02/06/2025 21:46

The conditioner method a poster put won’t kill the eggs or lice. Hardly any of them come out just using conditioner either, it’s the wrong texture. Keep using Hedrin. Wash all the clothes towels and bedding on a hot cycle.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/06/2025 21:53

I made a spray with water and tea tree oil to spritz DD’s ponytail after we’d got rid of ours and it may be a coincidence but she didn’t get them again

curlychocs · 02/06/2025 21:56

Nits are constant in primary school. The only thing that has worked for us is the conditioner and comb. Then wash hair and comb again. Do this every 3 nights until clear. The lotions lose effectiveness. After covid and no contact with anyone, within a week of school, my youngest had nits. They are so resilient.

Manysocks · 02/06/2025 22:02

You need a Nitty Gritty comb.
use this with cheap conditioner. It gets the eggs out too. I did have to repeat for a few days on my son once, but he had long thick hair and was riddled. 🤮

scaredysquiggle · 02/06/2025 22:13

Nitty gritty and cheap tea tree conditioner. Never used any chemicals here and always broke the cycle within the timeframe of the nhs guide.

always saw plenty of lice and eggs in the conditioner that I wiped off the comb. Only three infestations over the lifetime of my kids in primary school.

ChateauMargaux · 02/06/2025 22:21

I have never used lice treatment.... just conditioner and wet combing. I used to wet comb until there were no more nits, then every three days, then back to daily if anything appeared... stop when I got to two weeks with no signs of lice or eggs. My kids are older now, so it's not an issue. I think we had them 4 times in all ... one episode seemed to go on for longer... 3 days clear... then one would appear...
