90 years since driving tests began..

I've just seen it on the news... I feel very sorry for those struggling to get a test. I'm severely dyspraxic and failed six times before I decided driving wasn't for me!
I thought I'd share the story of my Grandma...

My Grandma Daisy had to take her test in 1935 after having been driving a few years. Prior to this she renewed her licence each year but didn't after my uncle was born.
My great grandfather imported a lot of American cars. Grandma was so tiny that people thought there was no one behind the wheel!! When she took her test it was the same day as two tractor drivers on Grandads Farm. Grandad didn't give two hoots whether Grandma passed. He was however desperate for the tractor drivers to pass... Grandma passed... The tractor drivers failed!! 🤣 🤣 🤣
In the 1970s Grandma went to the motor show to choose a new car..She rang Grandad.. "Reggie dear, I've found a lovely car...!" "What make is it dear??" "I cant remember, it's three letters!!" Grandma had chosen a BMW!! 🤣 🤣 ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️

I never thought to ask whether my dad ever took a driving test. He was certainly driving before tests were required. He was an excellent driver.

My uncle was also driving before tests were required and only took a test when he was in the Army in WW2. One of the jobs he had then was teaching other soldiers to drive lorries.

They suspended the need for tests for a few years during the war. My grandad got his licence that way. He actually met my grandma because he nearly ran her over on a zebra crossing Grin thankfully he improved his driving since then. I remember him as a very careful driver who valued cars for a combination of cost and safety reputation.

My grandma never took a driving test, and she was one of the best drivers I have ever known.

Whereas some people you know, they take it six times and they’re still not great 😂
