Bought new dishwasher back end of last year as the old faithful Beko finally gave up the ghost. Paid a lot more for this one (Bosch) but from day one I haven't really been satisfied with its performance. Even opening the door after the cycle has finished it never smells really clean.
The one at work is ancient (Hoptpoint) yet it never ever smells, even when the door has remained closed all weekend. I've tried different dishwasher tablets, salt and rinse aid but nothing really helps and I hate the smell of lemon scented products

Filter cleaned regularly and I do a monthly intensive maintenance wash. Plates go in scraped and rinsed if very soiled

Could be the drain pipe kinked?

Failing that, anything with egg on or too much salt causes that smell.
If you're using tablets with built in salt, don't add more.

Have you put it on a hot wash when empty? That would be the first thing on my list to try.

Put rinse and salt in. Failing that I'd get someone in to look at the drain pipe - something could be stuck in there.

It's your drain pipe, there's something blocking it and the smell is backing up.

Get a plumber

Funnily enough, I am currently waiting in for a washing machine engineer about this very problem. It produces a nasty smell when it's in use, but doesn't really smell before or after the wash. DP has checked every pipe and orifice he can find, but they're all clear and clean. We've changed detergent, done empty boil washes and run through a specialist washing machine cleaner, and anything else we could think of but to no avail. It's a mystery at the moment, but I'm hoping we have an answer by the end of the day🤞.
Will report back later.

Just spotted yours is a dishwasher, not a washing machine. Sorry, I have washing machines on the brain ATM.

Look up “why does my water smell like wet dog” - it’s a common problem and will make you feel a bit sick, it means you have a problem with your pipes

Get someone in to check if the new machine was installed “properly” so water can’t stay in the pipes and is draining out fully.

I agree with pp , although mine was a issue with my washing machine.
It was fine in one house then when I moved ( only a few miles so same water source ) it started to really smell within about 2 weeks .
It turns out the pipe was to long so water was sat in it for a long time and smelt terrible.
Shortening and repositioning the pipe sorted out.

Ahsheeit · 02/06/2025 16:25

Just adding - when it's sorted, leave open a bit to dry out, same with washing machines. Stops them smelling musty.

Thanks everyone, looks like it might be the drain hose thing thats the issue. I had a neb at the back of the office dishwasher and the pipe is short and straight compared to mine.
Will try and remedy this which hopefully will addess the whiff
