So he did something bad enough that his mum had to leave work because he was sent home from school, but that's apparently hilarious??! Ffs! 🙄

Motnight · 02/06/2025 12:27

Saw this yesterday. Two things sprang to mind for me. Firstly, that looked like a lot of squash being put into the glass 😬. Secondly shit lazy story line.

sellotape12 · 02/06/2025 12:37

I’m not sure if I’m missing something. It just made me feel irritated and I don’t know why? Maybe because it’s embarrassing and disruptive enough to be called from the school when you’re busy, I don’t want to see that on screen for some reason. Then she laughed at whatever he has done which I kinda thought was disrespectful to the school. Not seeing what ‘the thing’ he did was doesn’t help you decide whether to sympathise or not. They shouldn’t have approved this idea two months after Adolescence was on telly, lol.

Yeah I think it disrespects the school too. What chance have schools got if this is how parents react to their child misbehaving? Hilarious. Not.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 02/06/2025 12:55

I get it, they have a true bond.

I just think that we're in a time where single mums (it seems to me that she is a single mum) get so so much flack about being unable to raise children. We're constantly told of the importance of men and their mental health and being role models 🙄, and that a man must be present else the child will fail.

Because of that, it should've been a more positive portrayal of the bond between single mums and their children, with the mother being excellent and the child being well behaved.

dustygrey · 02/06/2025 13:05

Yup - agree, thats an awful advert

Darragon · 02/06/2025 13:08

Not a fan.

BagGreen24 · 02/06/2025 18:34

Totally undermines the school and makes her look like a lazy parent who allows her son to misbehave. Awful advert!

Amelie2025 · 02/06/2025 18:44

I was a bit confused by it, but decided that their laughter was so nice & infectious they seemed like a genuine mum & son, not actors, that I was just going to enjoy it & not over analyse it!

as for the amount she put in the glass 🤢🤮

Flappybirds · 02/06/2025 19:51

Absolutely awful advert. Whatever the child has done requires, at the very least, a stern conversation between mum and son. This is exactly the type of permissive parenting that is contributing to current societal failures.

I’m adding Robinsons to my boycott list.

sellotape12 · 02/06/2025 21:03

Oh yeah maybe they are real mum and son. Good. I just didn’t like the punching down aspect on the school teacher. They’re struggling are schools, they all are.
i thought I’d like it but it was so off watching it. Weird decisions. Made me feel Robinsons was a bit spiteful? And don’t get me started on the new Hovis ad - patronising “northern people are reet poor” trope.

So that just explains one of the main reasons why teachers are leaving the profession in droves.

So he is sent home in the middle of the day (which isn’t even something that happens unless he has been incredibly badly behaved - think destruction of property, injuries to someone) and then they just laugh about it…..

Totally undermines teachers and schools 😢

ssd · 03/06/2025 08:31

Really stupid advert in my opinion.

sellotape12 · 03/06/2025 09:21

They took it down but it’s here

DH used to be teacher and so are a lot of our mates. Secondary and junior isn’t easy. Teachers are basically doing 3 jobs all in one, for crap pay. I might be being thick but I don’t get it. Also to me, Robinson squash is about hot summer days, spending their energy, keeping them hydrated when they’re thirsty. Proper childhood stuff. Why not make it about that? I don’t know. This advert makes me associate Robinsons with sweets and naughty things not wholesomeness.

I think it’s about the mother and son colluding in deciding that, whatever transgression the son did that caused the mother to have to fetch him from school, it’s OK to laugh about it together. Since it’s not made clear what it was, the only message it sends is to say that teachers can be undermined and their sanctions for poor behaviour and choices made fun of.

Which probably isn’t a surprise to many teachers who face that kind of response on a weekly, if not daily basis.

Robinsons should be ashamed of promoting that, of selecting an advertising agency that thinks it’s an amusing story and I hope it backfires on them.

JSMill · 03/06/2025 09:30

Speak to anyone who works in a school and they will tell you behaviour is a huge problem in schools these days. So many pupils don’t understand boundaries or have respect for the adults who work in the school. Parents minimise bad behaviour if the school raises it with them or blame others. This ad has touched a nerve with teachers because it just demonstrates the attitude some parents have towards bad behaviour. Sometimes you feel like you are fighting a losing battle.

ThanksForTheSong · 03/06/2025 09:45

I’ve just been on TikTok and teachers were reacting to this video, all generally irritated by it. I don’t blame them. One did say that we can perhaps infer that the serious talking to happened in the car on the way home so there was maybe a chance that whatever the child did was addressed first, before laughing, but that doesn’t really make it any better.

I wonder if the advert will pay off. People are talking about it so maybe it will, but I did see some comments saying from people saying they won’t buy Robinsons again.

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/06/2025 18:49

Crap advert. They could have made it so the boy got in trouble for something that is technically against the school rules but a bit daft but then you wouldn’t get called from work for that. It sums up the attitude of some of the general public. Teachers are just figures of fun. Schools only exist to annoy etc.

Agree

bringbackthespira · 03/06/2025 18:59

Irritated the living shit out of me!
“let’s piss about at school, you come and get me and I’ll just have a massive glass of juice while we laugh” 🙄

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 03/06/2025 18:59

It also implies you don't love your DC if you discipline them.

Keefyboy · 03/06/2025 19:03

This is a terrible ad that promotes rewarding
what we assume is bad behaviour at school
with a sugary drink which is probably fuelling the kids hyperactive behaviour in the first place and laughing about it. WTF

The marketing director or brand person at Britvic who forced this to happen should be fired
