Do men still wear medallions?

I know a lot of older boys and young men favour heavy-looking neck chains and beads but I haven't seen a medallion in years. BTW, I don't mean crucifixes and crosses but actual circular metal discs on a chain.

I don't do jewellery, apart from a few inexpensive watches.

My DH (62) has never worn a necklace of any sort.

This reminds me of a guy we saw in a roughish pub day time drinking.
Black suit, red shirt undone medallion, red patent shoes..nice 🤣🤣oh and hair greased quiff style.

I haven't seen a medallion in years! I'd kind of forgotten about them.

Medallion nestled in the chest hair - makes me think of the 80s!

TheTecknician · 01/06/2025 22:14

I wonder if medallions are now regarded as naff ? I admit to having chest hair - nowt wrong with that - but a medallion? No way. Similarly, big chunky gold sovereign rings. They seem to be rare nowadays.

They've always been naff and sovvie rings nearly always adorned by ned types (Scotland).

SquashedMallow · 01/06/2025 22:17

I think it's a "look" - no judgement as my roots are firmly working class - but it's usually a "working class/middle aged to older / pub going/ darts playing/ smoker/love my 5 girls (daughters)" thing. They're usually gentle giants. I think the looked died with the generation. I suppose back in the day they thought they looked smart and they probably did 😄.

RightOnTheEdge · 01/06/2025 22:20

Medallions and sovereign rings just make me think of Frank Butcher.

My dad still wears the tiny gold medalion from his baptism on a chain with a small cross. It's under his clothes though. Early 60s Italian man - so a cultural/religious thing more than a fashion thing.

DS1 (9) thinks its cool so I've said we will get him one if he makes his confirmation in a few years.

Please! You mean the 70s.

shellyleppard · 01/06/2025 23:10

My dad is 80 and has worn the same medallion for nearly 45 years. It's a st Christopher and myself and my mum saved up for it when I was little. My dad travelled abroad for work and we wanted to keep him safe x

Medallions were always regarded as naff.
Not something you wanted to see a mate of yours wearing.
Badge of a total loser.

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 02/06/2025 14:45

They were as naff in the 80s as they are now, 70s was when I remember them. Calling someone a medallion man was not a compliment.

TheTecknician · 02/06/2025 21:24

I guess the neck chains I mentioned upthread are the new naff for today's boy-man. Whenever I see one I'm tempted to clip a lead on to it and take its wearer walkies.

I've only seen older blokes in Spain or Italy wearing thick gold chains, but more like a style thing than an actual medallion. A mate of mine wears rosary beads catholic style—it’s more for fashion than religion, even though he's not religious at all. So yeah, stuff like that does pop up still, just not really in the classic medallion sense.

PermanentTemporary · 10/10/2025 17:51

I’ll be completely honest, when I read your thread title I was immediately turned on Blush Medallions were the absolute epitome of naff when I was a teenager in the 80s. But now I just think of the glint of gold and hair on a fine chest and ooh… what’s not to like!

I’m sure they were effectively imported via movies from Catholic American cultures, originating as religious medals I guess, usually a blue collar thing, see also a nice Star of David from US Jewish cultures. Hence a bit of a no no in my extremely uptight Church of England upper middle upbringing where in fact modesty and being covered up for both men and women though an unspoken taboo is very important, and cultural signifiers happen via clothes (tie colours, types of suit) not body adornments. A bit like tattoos tbh. But things are v different now. My son certainly owns some heavy chains (as well as some ties with meaning and a posh suit). Maybe I should get him a medallion for Christmas.

Pedallleur · 10/10/2025 17:55

It was look in 70s/80s. My father loved jewellery. He was born 1930. He had a chain, a sovereign medallion, a chunky bracelet and a diamond ring. Thankfully he didn't wear them all at once. Those thick gold chains are worn by hip hoppers/rap artists etc. Prob chavs dream of having them. May look ok on Dr. Dre but not on some yoof from Ilford or Burnage

BatFeminist · 10/10/2025 18:08

Judging by all the dodgy moustaches being sported this will be the next stage

helpfulperson · 10/10/2025 18:17

It was very much Bee Gees fashion following wasn't it. Shirts open to the waist, chest hair and large medallion.

  1. Travolta with shirt open but not a big medallion. Worst look was the big medallion, a couple of rings and the ubiquitous yellow gold Rolex day date often seen on boxers and men of a certain age who had acquired some money.
Gowlett · 10/10/2025 19:39

My dad used to have the hairy chest, open shirt, gold medallion thing going on back in the 70s. And big hair too!
