What is the height limit for garden fences ?

Is it 6ft or more? Plus if I wanted to have a higher fence but it’s the side that is my neighbours fence can I just put my own up next to their one? As long as it’s not attached to it at all?

Recently got a new neighbour and I just can’t stand her, I want to put up the highest fence allowed. She’s relentless and I have a low threshold for being bothered and also for CF so this will enable us to enjoy our garden again !

Usually 6ft for fences - planting hedgerow might be more effective

I want something instant but not sure of the rules I keep seeing that it’s 6ft or 6ft 6 but I don’t want to get it wrong . Currently it’s a 5ft fence

My neighbours fences are 8ft. SO MUCH SHADE and so ugly but I hate confrontation so I'll just whine on here instead.

Generally it's 6ft, but it's different for hedges, plants and trees.
You can also elevate your ground level with decking and add a 6ft fence that would be much taller.
I would always advise to contact your LA about specific rules for your area though as they do vary.

bilbodog · 01/06/2025 18:08

I think you can put 6’ fence plus some trellis.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 01/06/2025 18:09

Is 6ft/2m. Yes you could put your own fence up completely within your property's boundary next to her. The foundations for your fence posts would have to not impact her fence. Bear in mind she could remove her fence and gain the use of a few inches of your garden if you did that.

Alternatively, you could put panels on legs up to add height to her fence from your side without touching or overhanging her fence.

You could plant pleached trees and/or fast growing shrubs such as laurels or even spiky pyracantha as barrier. Clump forming bamboo in pots. The maximum height of plants isn't restricted.

I think regardless of how much you hate her it would be courteous to go round and discuss the height etc. My neighbour just attached some trellis to the brick wall without discussion and it was quite a shock. I sulked for a bit but decided it wasn’t worth souring relations over

Oh wow 8ft!!!

Im the same I hate confrontation so that’s why I want to just put a fence up instead of shouting at her to stop leaning over every time we are out there and talking and talking and talking and to stop asking can her dc play on our dcs garden things as she’s waiting to get some and she has noticed some days they arent used at all. Then her kids start calling over. Constant requests to borrow stuff . Always asking can we just throw the hose over as she hasn’t got an outside tap or a hose and wants to water the plants. Just constant 😬

A few inches of lost garden would be worth it to have my privacy back again . I love my garden and we used to always enjoy sitting having a coffee out there on weekend mornings and now all we have is her hanging over the fence talking and talking and talking

It would be worth telling her you don't want to talk and want privacy when in your garden before you incur costs. It'll be a darn sight cheaper although not an easy conversation.

supersonicginandtonic · 01/06/2025 20:11

Oh gosh our old neighbours were like this. Although our fence had gaps between the slats (cheap new build fence). Always talking to us when we wanted to sit quietly in the garden and read or chill after work. They were also swearing constantly. I think they got the hint when I put up some screening so we couldn't see them 😂

BeaLola · 01/06/2025 20:21

If it's at the back just grow large hedge or plants at the back to add the height .

Seeline · 01/06/2025 20:37

It's 2m which works out at about 6'6", as long as it isn't adjacent to a road.
Anything higher would need planning permission.
Yes you can put your fence up on your own land next to the neighbours.
