If you give jigsaw puzzles to the charity shop...

(and especially if you're careful to make sure all the pieces are in the box)

I just want to say thank you!! I appreciate you.

Nothing more satisfying than enjoying a good quality puzzle for a bargain price.

I have half a dozen to get through over the summer (I like doing them in the summer because of the natural light in the evenings). I'm hoping they have all their pieces. I haven't been disappointed yet.

I’ve always loved doing jigsaws, mostly 1000 pieces.
Most people know that puzzle treat it like a swap shop, we usually have several in the house at a time which we pick up at car boot fairs as well as charity shops.

Any that turn out to have pieces missing, I stick a tiny label in the exact place on the box and write on it. Tens to put those ones on Olio or Freecycle, they always go.

When Dd was 2 she burnt her hand and had to have skin graft.and her left hand was bandaged up. She became obsessed with puzzles and i ended up haunting all the local charity shops to find them. She was doing 50 piece puzxles within weeks
As an adult she still enjoys a good 1000 piece although she wanted a very obscure Wasjig one for christmas .

They've become really expensive in our charity shops so we're not buying half as many as we used to.

We always put the pieces in a bag inside and then if there's a piece missing mark it on the box, at least people know then before they buy it.

My mum loves a jigsaw and I volunteer in a charity shop so I buy her jigsaws (they are £3 in our shop), she does them, I donate them back again. Any which are incomplete don't get donated back.

I give mine to charity shops. Count the pieces put them in a ziplock freezer bag and make sure the box is clean and in good shape.

Then, try not to bring another back!! Don't always succeed.

We have a local jigsaw swap Facebook group! 😀

Our library has a great jigsaw section 😊

I had a small, unexpected lottery win recently and talked myself into splurging it on a Colin Thompson 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle. Fortunately, I already have an extending table on which to do it.

I've put off opening the box until I've done a batch cook-up because I just know the housework will go hang for a couple of weeks and I'll be living on quick to rustle up sandwiches!

Mymanyellow · 01/06/2025 11:02

I can’t flipping do them. I really struggle even my dgc I just can’t.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 01/06/2025 11:05

You are welcome!! I've a collection so am getting rid of some soon but will be completing them all in preparation, just in case! Only jigsaw lovers truly understand the upset of a missing piece after all their hard work.

I'm always irritated by the way the charity shops et cetera put those scruffy bits of sellotape on the edges, again and again. When I give one to the charity shop or stall, I tie it round with very thin string, like a parcel, so the lid stays on without sellotape being involved. If a piece is missing I say so, either in the box or on a label tied to the string.
I had a nice talk to a lady in a charity shop a week or two ago - a customer. She
puts the main pieces into a zip-up polybag and the outside pieces into another little polybag, before she takes them back.
I have a 3000 one to tackle - When October comes maybe I'll start it. The evenings are longer, inside, but the light isn't so good, which is a drawback.

I love a Jigsaw (see my username!). We have a village library that has a supply of jigsaws. Recently I've borrowed a couple where someone has separated edge pieces and mid pieces into separate bags... I couldn't decide if that was cheating or helpful!

Zanzara · 01/06/2025 12:35

Ooh, I've found my tribe! 😄🧩

I'm a keen advocate of putting the main pieces in one ziplock bag and outside pieces in another before sending to the charity shop. I love the retro Gibson's jigsaws, by artists such as Trevor Mitchell and Steve Crisp, and like the ones on a similar theme that come four in a box. I also like some of the House Of Puzzles ones with the unusual shaped pieces that don't always interlock.

I tend to try and do jigsaws relevant to the time of year, so I shall shortly be starting on British seaside themes for the next few months. Finding a good charity shop example is always a happy day, some I do once and return and others become old favourites I'll enjoy doing again. I've started to condense two into a box with some of them to save space, sticking the small image from the side of the box on the edge of the other box and then including the picture inside.

I'm currently at my second home in Spain, and sadly the charity shop sector here is very underdeveloped compared to the UK. Looking forward to a jolly good mooch round my favourite charitiy shops when I return home soon! 😊💕
