UC for 17 year old?

My DS is 17 and is NEET (not in employment or education). He gets PIP, for which I am his appointee as he has no interest in money and doesn’t want a bank account. Would I also be able to claim UC for him? Or does he need to be 18? I wasn’t sure from google but it seems if you have a disability you can apply when you’re 16/17. Does anyone have experience with this?

Also would he need an assessment to get limited capability for work and work related activities? If he didn’t get that presumably he’d have to look for work to get UC?

Can’t advise on the age thing.

yes he would need an assessment to get UC without working. The assessment is very similar to the PIp one (I did both last year). The form is similar and the telephone assessment is similar.

it’s likely if he hasPIP he’ll get LCWRA. PIP is harder.

Speak to citizens advice. For now under 22's can claim the LCWRA element but this may change with the new proposals if they go ahead. You will need to hand in sick notes for him and may need an assesmsent. make sure you are his appointee if he can't deal with it himself.
