Newly started Candesartan and feeling very woolly headed?

I recently started Candesartan for migraine, only on 4mg once a day but feeling very fuzzy, woolly headed, I have zero get up and go and am wondering about aimlessly trying to get things done.

Its early days yet of course but does anyone know if this side effect goes away in time? I currently take it right before bed but will taking it earlier reduce this side issue as I'm currently not much use until tea time.

I've got to go out now but I will check back here and reply later or tomorrow if anyone has any experience!

I've been on 16mg for around 10 years now, like others I've been on, it was an adjustment but I've found it good and side effect free. My GP did insist on two weekly blood tests in the beginning and with any increase just to make sure. It may just need a bit of time, or maybe a different type could be better. I had side effects with ace inhibitors, which is why I was put on this one.

@LudditeHere Thanks, did you feel tired or lightheaded at all at the start and did it go away eventually?

I honestly don't remember feeling tired or dizzy because of the meds. I had a preschooler at the time so any tiredness was put down to that. I do get dizziness now but that's meno related I think. This one has been quite good at maintaining my BP.

I have been on it for a few weeks and feel exactly as you describe. I still have high BP though. I do feel feel better than when I started , I think your body needs time to adjust.

@LudditeHere It is hard to tease out the cause of things at times, but its been very similar timings for feeling woozy vs fine, I'm feeling much better now for example compared to earlier. Glad it seems to be working for you.

@Tripthelightfantastical Thanks, that is what I am hoping, I will try taking the tablet a bit earlier tonight and see how it goes. Its too early to give up on the med for sure. Hope it starts working for your BP soon!

Are you taking it with food? You need to take it with food.

silkbook · 01/06/2025 17:20

@Tripthelightfantastical No I've been taking it right before bed, hours after my last meal. I will take it with dinner tonight.

That might be why you’re feeling off! The chemist was very insistent with me that it must be taken with food.

silkbook · 01/06/2025 17:37

@Tripthelightfantastical Thank you hopefully that will help, it wasn't mentioned to me at all!

I've taken bp meds for over 20 years and all (except one which was three times per day) were to be taken in the morning. I've just got into the habit of getting up and taking meds first thing with breakfast. I don't recall being told it needs to be taken with food, I've not read the info since I first started it, but this routine works for me.

It’s only Candesartan that needs to be taken with food

I take 16mg for high blood pressure, take it before bed with no issues

silkbook · 01/06/2025 18:28

@LolaAnn12 So you never experienced any light headedness or tiredness with it even at the start? I have normal BP so perhaps its more of an issue if your blood pressure is normal or lower?

OP posts:
silkbook · 01/06/2025 18:30

@LudditeHere I think I will try it with dinner tonight and see how it goes. It seems as though if I take it at say 11.30pm then I feel woozy until about 4pm the next day, so perhaps taking it earlier will help this feeling wear off faster.

LolaAnn12 · 01/06/2025 18:32

@silkbook no, never, had any issues with it. Might be making your blood pressure low? You should see your GP

silkbook · 01/06/2025 18:38

@LolaAnn12 I am getting my BP and blood tested this week before putting the dose up. I have checked my BP at home and it's fine at the moment. I think some people probably do take longer to adjust and that might be truer for migraine than hypertension but I don't know. Unless the GP tells me to stop I will keep trying for a bit longer.
