I'm almost finished. But I'm not sure how I feel about the planters. They are there to hide the bins a bit. But im not sure if they should be sitting on the wall rather than hanging on the railings. But if I sat them on the wall I would need to find a,way to balance them /keep them on as the bit they would sit on is to narrow.

Any general suggestions as a whole.

What a great project OP well done. It looks lovely and neat. I agree with PP don’t put anything plastic up it will look awful. I would ditch the railing planters they will be a pain to keep watered etc. What I would do is buy a Montana clematis from the supermarket Morrisons or Asda or B&M often have them in small square 9cm pots. Then make a hole in the corner of the weed membrane. Plant the clematis in the hole and put the gravel back. Now then a Montana is vigorous but you can use that to your advantage just twine it in amongst the railings and trim back whatever grows too much. It will cover the railings in no time and give you flowers in the Spring and doesn’t mind a North facing position and they are virtually impossible to kill.

I can't do any of that . There is nothing to dig into . On the before oic whete you see the weed membrane and gravel that's no longer there. The groubd is now rock solid like concrete.

I can't get rid of the planters/plants i bought them yesterday. I can't just throw money away 😭

Enjoy all the hard work you’ve done and relax!

I agree with @DollopOfFun put the planters on the other side or get more and have them both sides

Don’t let you plants hear you say that! They’ve got feelings you know..☺️

Move one here, so you actually get to look at and enjoy it.

I wouldn't worry about hiding them from other people, everyone else has the same problem, focus on what you can see from your windows. I'd be very annoyed if the council made me have 4 bins. I've recently been giving a small food waste one in addition to the other 3 and it's already pissing me off.

Edit: just saw your other post re a judgmental woman who said your garden is disgusting - it's really not, it's perfectly normal. You can't do much to make it look nice when your front 'garden' is supposed to be bin storage and tiled over/cement.

The bin thing is my fault. Everyone else has just 2 bins. I have 1 recycle. 2 general house hold . The yellow one is like my over flow bin. I pay for that one privately.

From my window I can see the bins. But its just the kitchen window i don't spend any time in there .

I can add an extra planter to the side bit.

Same here, 4 bins, madness.

Blablasheep · 31/05/2025 15:29

I would say they definitely need to be facing "outside", it will look better.

Regarding rude person : she was just a stupid you can't really just till something is finished. Ok it's not the best but its tidy now and practical for me.

Ok I will move then in a day or so I need to wait for the ground to fully set. I can't tread on it till then. Someone up thread also suggested both sides so I may give that some thought. I do feel like i should have done it as one long planter though. Not sure how.

Regarding keeping your plants alive, they just need a good water once a day when it’s dry. They’ll be fine.

Ophy83 · 31/05/2025 16:21

I love their idea of planters to disguise the bins. I think I'd plant some trailing plants in them that would go over the fence and hang down - it would look more dramatic and provide more coverage of the bins

tinyspiny · 31/05/2025 16:30

I think the garden is tidy and practical , I assume it’s the front of your house so I wouldn’t turn the planters out as kids will just damage your plants and some busybody will complain to the council that they are jutting out on the path . However they are a bit wasted where they are so if you have a back garden I would just repurpose them out there so that you get the benefit .

I think so too. There’s just no disguising these government issue pieces of plastic. If anyone wants to complain, give them your council’s number - direct line to the gods.

Enjoy your plants in your space.

No one would complain. But I was thinking the same regarding teenagers though. I don't thibk they are wasted there as its to hide the bins which thru are doing . Ok not 100% but I think the take the edge off it a bit.

People don't report stuff like that round here.. but I do agree the planters are probably better on the inside of the fence although they can still be reached i think outside is almost like an invite.

It can go from wall to top railing though - trim around the planter brackets.

I didn't understand what you meant at first but think I do now . I think it would be good to do that but im wondering if there's an alternative to bamboo. I hate bamboo.

I think you'd struggle to find a really long planter, it would probably be too heavy too.
I think yours look lovely, as someone suggested trailing plants would also work great. And don't be afraid to put one or two more plants per planter for more fullness (obviously the current ones need a bit of time to spread).

You could get willow on a roll but more expensive I think.

I definitely one million percent do not want climbers.

I could make a wooden planter.

I think you’ve done a great job. Screening panels as already mentioned, can be bought cheaply.
