How can I cover white hair

My hair is really odd. On the top of my head front part to roughly the center of my head my hair is solid white. Then it stops and gos a weird sort of light brown/dark blond. I don't want black.

If i dye it with permanent dye woukd it come out in the pool when I'm on holiday. Also what make should I use. I would do it myself not via hair dresser

Don't try it at home, especially if you are not experienced at it!
White hair is much harder to cover, and you are likely to end up darker than you want at the back and no very well covered on the top... Trust me on this. It won't come out in a pool but it's unlikely to look as you'd hope.
Most people's hair goes grey/white from front to back, mine certainly is!

I can't afford to go to the hair dresser

I've always done mine at home, apart from a period when I had highlights, and never had any problems. The instructions are very clear if you follow them properly.
It's quite common to go white at the top and front first - that's what motivated me to do something about it.
I have used various brands but nowadays usually use Clairol Loving Care. They do Root Touch Up or various ones for the whole lot. Don't go for too dark a colour compared to your own colour and do make sure you cover anything not to be dyed! But it's really not difficult when you've got the hang - and very, very much cheaper than the hairdresser.

Ok if you are determined to do it at home, start with a semi permanent one to see if you like it, as hopefully the fading will blend in with the regrowth. Go for a dark blonde shade not light brown.

Won't that come out in the pool when I go in holiday ? Also would it even cover white.

No, semi permanent won’t just come out like a coloured spray, it’s more like 6-8 weeks of washing that gets it out. Something like casting crème. It won’t 100% cover the white, but will do a good job and if you hate it, you’re not stuck with a regrowth line for long (you’ll get a bit of a line while it fades)

I understand it lasts around 6-8 weeks. But I wasn't sure if it would come out fast because of long periods of time in the water . Whilst on holiday . I won't get the regrowth /roots as my hair does not grow at all. Last time I dyed my hair the white came through very fast . Rest of the hair stay the dyed colour for a while.. the front felt totally pointless

Could you try the Clairol root touch up? It’s permanent hair dye but it doesn’t last that long. I use it between hair appointments

RosesAndHellebores · 30/05/2025 07:03

@Youagain2025 my hair is exactly the same. White at the front/top and still dark(ish) at the back. My own colour was akin to "wild rodent" - light but dirty brown. I had highlights from the age of about 15 to lift it.and have always coloured it.

Nowadays my hairdresser, keeps the base colour a dark blonde/light brown, and then puts through two or three colours as highlights. I have it done every 6 or 7 weeks. I won't tell you what I pay because you might hyper ventilate but it's worth every penny and cheap for London.

If I couldn't have it done orofessionally, I'd leave it in it's natural state.

Would it Need to do any bleaching?

no it would not cover the white but make all your head highlighted and more even looking to blend in the white
