Is this enough clothes for a newborn?

I have 2DC but it’s been years since I’ve had a baby and I can’t remember a lot 😅 ordered everything online but not sure if it’s enough/right things? Baby due in four weeks (summer baby) so need to make sure I’ve got what I need soon. I have ordered:

12x newborn onesies
6x newborn vests
10x 0-3 months vests
10 x 0-3 onesies
5x 0-3 cardigans
2x sleeping bags (a 1 tog and a 2.5)
2 x dresses
3 x leggings
1 x romper outfit

And a bunch of hats/mittens. I’m pretty sure I kept my other DC in onesies and vests during the day unless it was very hot, hence getting the dresses and leggings for such a time, but I don’t really remember. Do I have enough to be getting started with? Do babies wear onesies during the summer??

I would say that's plenty..my LO was in 0-3 for all of 6 weeks so make sure you have some 3-6 so you have something to progress in to!

This is way way more clothes than you need for a newborn. They will be out of the newborn size in a couple of weeks and the 0-3 months by 6 weeks if they are anything like mine. I had hand me down 7 short vests and 7 pyjama sets, plus a blanket for the pram and that was enough. The only thing (and it’s not clothing per se) I do think is missing is loads of muslins - I used big ones for swaddling and small ones as a mix of wipes, tissues, face clothes etc.

Have you got a sunhat, as well as the standard newborn hats?

Otherwise, it looks good for now. Unless you're extremely rural, someone can always pop to the supermarket if you discover you urgently need more of something or a different size.

I have 1 sun hat, several normal hats and gloves and some muslins.

Unless you know your baby will be tiny you won't need 10 newborn onesies. I'd say 4 would be enough
My babies wore newborn for only 2 weeks then went into 0-3 months. If a girl.id buy a few extra cotton dresses.

I only have the newborn ones as I was given those, I remember my DD was straight into 0-3 😂

Sounds good, you are at least not making the assumption that 0-3 months was the same as newborn as I did with DD1 and had to rush out to Mothercare when we got home from the hospital! Even though she was 8lbs the 0-3 months were way too big. But only for a few weeks. DD2 was 9lb 2oz and 10cm longer so was probably only in newborn for two weeks.

I wouldn't get 3-6 months yet. People tend to buy you stuff in 3-6 months or 6-9 months so I'd see how much you get first then work out what you need.

Looks fine to me!

I was constantly told that they wouldn't be in newborn for long but in fact, they were. So much so that I had to buy more newborn because 0-3 would drown him.

He was definitely in newborn for more than a few weeks and he was almost 8lbs so not teeny tiny.

ChannelLightVessel · 28/05/2025 15:05

What sort of size were your other DC? My past-term DD was only 5lb11oz, and started off in premature baby clothes (XH and others had to rush to shops). DD wore 0-3m clothes until she was 6m. And yes, as PP said, 3-6m was the most popular size for gifts.

Fourteenandahalf · 28/05/2025 15:05

I think that's good. My ds was super sicky so I did have a fair number of things because everything got soaked! Both of mine went straight into 0-3 , so a fair number of those is good I think. Everyone bought us 3-6 months gifts.

namepains · 28/05/2025 15:06

Other DC were just under 9lb.

I would return some of the onesies. 6 vests but 12 onesies is odd as I always put both on together the first newborn stage as they get cold. So 6 or each is plenty

My 8lb 8 baby didn’t actually fit newborn at all. So went straight into 1month size. So maybe swap half the newborn for 1month

I think we had:
newborn - in hospital 2 days, didn’t fit
1 month - for about 3 weeks
0-3 months - until 6-8 weeks
then into 3-6

toastofthetown · 28/05/2025 15:16

That’s plenty in newborn and 0-3. The size I found really useful with my baby was 0-1 or up to 1 month. He was super long (99th centile for length) so he almost instantly was out of footed newborn sleepsuits, but 0-3 was huge and so baggy that when he scrunched his legs up they’d get stuck in the body section! One thing I wish I’d had more of in newborn and 0-1 month was footless sleepsuits and vest and legging outfits, because he has such long legs and big feet he outgrows things in the legs much quicker than the body. If it’s a warm summer, you’ll probably want more short sleeved rompers, but I’d wait until you know how big the baby is before buying, because they’re not like vests and sleepsuits which you can just put away for November!

But the shops don’t close after you have the baby and when they’re here you’ll figure out what works for them and what doesn’t, and if you’re like me you’ll add things anyway just because you think they’re cute so no need to have everything in advance.

A lot also depends on how often you put a load of washing on also. Newborn stuff doesn't take much of a load up when it's only being added to two adults. With 2DC also getting grubby or school uniforms or whatever you might have some baby stuff hanging around for a few days until washed. Also if no drier then I'd err on the cautious side incase of bad weather and not using the washing line

I was told that DS would be around 8lb, he was early and 10lb. He lasted a week in newborn and a month in 0-3. In a way I'm glad we had him as a surprise because we didn't buy anything beforehand and reused neutral stuff from DD.
