Leaving virgin media

We've been with them for a long time. but the process for renewing contracts has been increasingly silly with all sorts of huge rises in costs. Initially they would discuss on the retention line the options for staying and it'd be reasonable enough to make me stay.
The last two times though we got silly offers like £56 rather than £26 and so signed up with alternative providers. At that point they always intervened and rang up and offered us something sensible.
There's currently a deal for new people for £21 a month with VM.
Our renewal offer is insane. £64.
There's now more choice so we've again signed up with an alternative company for about £26 but with a cash back that'll bring it back down to £21 which will be nice.

VM have emailed a couple of times offering me to ring them up and discuss staying. Didn't have time yesterday to do this but might today. And this morning I've had an email saying they're sending packaging back for their equipment.

So am I actually leaving VM at last?

It is a proper nonsense that they can't just offer me the same as a new customer and price match - but we'll see what they say if I get through to them.

Interested to see what you get offered. I need to renegotiate ours as the discount i negotiated 18 months ago has just finished and the price has shot up.

The thought of the phone call just fills me with dread though.

Definitely leave VM. They rely on customers having the time and energy to complete the process to leave. You’ll just have to go through the same rigmarole next time your contract is finished. I hate them

mine is due to expire August. I went online and had a renewal price of £48 for 18 months but starting now. I used the online chat and got it for £50 / month starting July, instead of day, and for 24 months

OopsIforgotmyname · 28/05/2025 18:17

Leaving VM is easier said than done when they are the only fast broadband provider around here sadly.

mumda · 29/05/2025 11:37

We have a fairly wide choice here now - and VM has been rubbish (although I suspect our router is at the end of its useful life now as that's why our service was rubbish a few years ago, and that took me 3 phone calls and about a hundred hours of pressing phone options to get a new router sent out)

I just fear the unknown.
I'm waiting for them to ring. They haven't yet. Or maybe they have and my phone is thinking its spam.

We moved to BRSK from VM last year and never looked back. So much better and worked out as £20 pcm with a referral code. Wifi is fast and it was a quick set up. Here's a code if anyone is interested brsk.uk/VEHM

toycat · 29/05/2025 11:44

We gave up negotiating with VM as threatening to leave wasn't dropping the price - they were quoting us £50 a month for wifi only!

sashh · 29/05/2025 11:46

You will not regret leaving.

We left VM after many years of being with them. It got to the point where we were paying nigh on £90 a month for the basic tv and fast internet. We didn’t even use the tv really. We switched about 18 months ago to YouFibre..£29.99 for internet and nothing else (though my husband added an additional, optional thing for £6 a month). That deal lasted 18 months and we’ve just gone on to their normal package at £34.99 (plus the £6 add on) for really fast internet. It’s been brilliant. No issues whatsoever. <obviously touching all the wood saying that>

Sorry I have zero advice for you, I just read the title as Leaving vagina media and I thought ooh this is a new one 😅

I vowed to leave Virgin after they sent me a “free” Wi-Fi booster then started charging £5 a month for it. When I queried it Virgin pasted the buck to O2 who they’re now linked to and O2 passed the buck back to Virgin numerous times so I cancelled the direct debit, which then resulted in letters from a debt collection agency. Actually the debt collection agency were the easiest to get through to and the most understanding of the lot when I spoke to them.
My contract with Virgin has just ended and I opted to upgrade my mobile contract to unlimited data and minutes (unfortunately with O2 but that can’t be helped) as I don’t really use a laptop, and was barely using the extra tv channels or landline.
Virgin had wanted to charge £140-plus a month for broadband, tv and landline . Thieving bastards.
My O2 package is half price for the first six months, so £16 which isn’t much more than I was paying for my mobile contract anyway .

mumda · 28/06/2025 07:24

Oh Vodafone have been a huge pain in the arse. Compensation for lack of landline @ £6.24 a day though and £100 suffering compo.
Pure shocking incompetence regarding their inability to switch the landline on.
They also told me I wasn't entitled to this compo before changing their mind.

Virgin paying us compensation too as they tried billing me after disconnecting me early.

All working now but apparently a right mess to sort out as Vodafone have joined husband's previous application for an account (we stayed that time with VM) with my current application.

Exactly the same thing happened to us with VM! Partner spent all afternoon talking to them trying to negotiate a better price but the cheapest they said they could offer was £65. So now we've gone with a much better offer elsewhere...they emailed to discuss after we'd made the switch but we couldn't be bothered with them by then. Yes they sent the packaging for their equipment and we had to take it to the post office.
