Do you know any schools named after women?

Schools are far more likely to be named after men than women.

I'm wondering which women schools are named after. Is it vast majority Notre Dames and Our Ladys? I can think of a few schools that are named after famous men who weren't saints or bishops or kings.

Any female historical gems near you?

More free schools and academy trusts named after men than women

Historical factors don't adequately explain why more schools are named after men than women

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (9 June 1836 – 17 December 1917) was an English physician and suffragist. She is known for being the first woman to qualify in Britain as a physician and surgeon[1] and as a co-founder and dean of the London School of Medicine for Women, which was the first medical school in Britain to train women as doctors.[2] She was the first female dean of a British medical school, the first woman in Britain to be elected to a school board and, as mayor of Aldeburgh, the first female mayor in Britain.

Blimey, she was some woman...

But you’re right - the proportion named after women don’t reflect their impact on education.

Harriet Costello Secondary School and Queen Mary's College, Basingstoke.

Although the school is now an academy and just 'Costello' which is a shame.

Lady Eleanor Holles

I can't actually find out anything about Lady Eleanor Holles apart from the fact that she paid for the school to be founded in her will. I guess paying for it is a good way to get a school named after you though!

I actually can't think of many state schools named after people (except saints)

St Winefride's - the original, because it's in the town with the magic spring, where she was beheaded then healed. Not the one with the song.

St Werburgh?

Queen Edith's in Cambridge. She was married to Edward the Confessor and was an accomplished linguist, musician, mathmatician and diplomat, skilled in weaving and embroidery. She was credited with revamping her husband's public image and smartening him up. She outlived her husband by some years and us buried beside him in Westminster Abbey. William the Conquerer arranged her funeral.
