What are you doing this rainy half term with your older DC?

I have 3 DSes - 16, 14 & 11. DS2 has a significant amount of SEN & cannot be left. It is half term here, and of course it's raining!

DS1 is mid-exams so doing lots of revision, but still joining in some things. We are trying not to spend too much, as saving for our holiday in the summer. Anything involving food or fresh air tend to be the biggest hits! I do miss the days when they were happy with a playground or Play Doh at home!

So far we have:

  • had football training & match
  • gone for country walk with pub en route
  • carvery breakfast
  • afternoon/evening round grandparents to allow us a grown-up night out!
  • small National Trust property with free newspaper voucher (DS2 & 3)
  • baking
  • practise for drama exam (DS2)
  • 2 hours gaming per day instead if usual 1 hour

Planned:

  • swimming
  • day with grandmother while we both work
  • hospital appointment for DS2! Not sure what to do around that
  • party & football social for DS1 & 3

I am always open to more ideas 😁

Have you got time to fit in more?! I mean, we’re away somewhere sunny so don’t really have any tips but that seems a busy week already.

Maybe the cinema or Netflix movie day? Geocaching?

changedmyname24 · 27/05/2025 16:04

Most of those things only take up a couple of hours max 😏

Somewhere sunny sounds nice, we have to wait until post GCSEs & work annual leave.

There is nothing we fancy at the cinema & Netflix is hard work due to ADHD. Love the idea though!

We just did a family bike ride in the rain 😆 followed by hot chocolates at home with cream and marshmallows. That’s it for today. Homework and housework around that. My kids need the downtime so although not on devices, we are not cramming stuff in.

Escape room~

My teens are making slime in the kitchen with the 6 year old. As the kitchen is wipe clean I am taking it as a win, the teen is just as interested in the slime as the younger ones!

You sound busy enough already!

My teens were away all weekend at Scout camp/ D of E expeditions, so we're having a relaxed week and don't really have any plans!

DS has revision to do as exams after half term. I may take DD into town to go to an exhibition as I need to get my eyebrows done. We had an extended holiday at Easter (were away from the day they broke up to the day they went back) so everyone is very much having downtime.

DS2 is 16. He has friends that he occasionally plays online with, but they rarely socialise outside of school so holidays can be tough.

This week we’re prom suit shopping and having lunch out, tomorrow we’re going to see Final destination at the cinema. Other than that, nothing else planned. He is mid exams, so revision needs to be done. Think we’ll do something at the weekend with DH too

It’s really hard with older dc isn’t it. I have a teen and a pre schooler and have come to dread the holidays a bit as it’s so hard finding things to do with both.
So far:

Play date with toddlers friend while eldest stayed home.
Spent an hour (and lots of money) at the fair.

Planned:
Eldest and I will be having a day to ourselves maybe to go to the cinema or shopping centre.
Haircuts.
Dog walks and the park.
Meet with friends and their dc.
Possibly one breakfast or lunch out.
Household chores and food shop.
Library.
Hopefully a day out to the beach if the weather isn’t crap.
Loads of screen time. I don’t even feel bad about it during the holidays. It’s social for eldest as he games with his friends. With the toddler it’s the only way I can get anything done.
