eBay scam?

ThatDenimExpert · 25/05/2025 17:38

I am buying something on eBay and it’s a lot of money (over £100). They have a large postage cost attached to the item which they admit is a mistake but they say they can’t amend it. eBay won’t allow them to as they have sent out offers. They have said if I buy it they can amend the invoice afterwards? Am I likely to be out of pocket

Of course they can sort it before selling the item. I wouldn't trust them.

JudithOnHolidayAgain · 25/05/2025 17:39

Don't buy it.
Tell them to cancel and relist.

Do you think the item doesn't exist? Sounds like a mistake to me unless there's more indication that it's deliberate. Presumably you're happy to pay the amount you've bid.

I've not been on eBay for ages so dont know about the changing the invoice, maybe I'm missing the scam bit

I've had to look it up and a quick Google suggests you can't change the postage once the item is sold which seems to be what the problem is here

I haven’t bought it yet or bid on it. They say they can’t amend the postage cost because they’ve sent out offers.

Maybe ignore me then, when you said you were buying it I assumed that meant you were actually buying it 😂

I do want to buy it just want to sort this issue out before I do if the postage doesn’t actually cost what they have listed will they have to refund the difference or can they keep it

They should cancel and start over.

FalseSpring · 25/05/2025 19:16

It is true, you can't change the price or the postage if you have sent out offers. The seller will have to wait for the offers to expire. They could however cancel and start again.

There are a lot of problems with eBay postage costs and delivery at the moment so they may well be telling the truth. Have you looked at their previous feedbacks - if it’s all positive it’s likely the problem they say they have is real.
In the past sellers were able to determine their own method of despatch, charge buyers what they wanted within reason and buy postage direct from their chosen courier.
This freedom was removed with eBay’s new so called Simple Delivery system whereby sellers (unless they haven’t yet been moved over) now have no choice but to buy their postage with either Evri or Royal Mail through eBay.
To say there have been teething problems with this is an understatement. The eBay forums are full of complaints. The available parcel sizes that appear in listings cannot easily be changed and often bear no resemblance to the size and weight of the item being sold The prices charged are similarly well off the mark and frequently more expensive than sellers would pay if buying direct. I am one of many who has removed all my listings because I can’t be bothered with all the hassle.
