I a looking for some books for my son to enjoy. He is 7 years old and any suggestions for books he can read independently and also some I can read to him.

We have tried Roahl Dahl but he wasn’t really that interested in the actually stories!

My son has been reading Goosebumps lately, but I’m aware they’re not for all kids.

Bunny Vs Monkey, books by Andy Griffiths, Donut Squad take over the world, Sam Wu, Rex Dinosaur in Disguise series, Adventure Mice, books by Cressida Cowell, Minecraft Woodsword Chronicles, Loki series by Louie Stowell, King Coo, Robo bros, Investigators, Looshkin - all books my son has enjoyed.

Some he's listened to on audio book and some I've read to him. Some are graphic novels which he loves most of all.

My just turned 8 year old loves dog man and captain underpants. He’s recently started the first Harry Potter and seems to be enjoying it, he’s a massive fan of the films.

Reachoutreachout · 25/05/2025 09:26

As above, Dog Man, Captain Underpants, 13 Storey Treehouse, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Beano.

The Beano and The Phoenix magazines

CoodleMoodle · 25/05/2025 09:39

DS7 has fairly recently read all of the Treehouse books, Mr Gum, Daisy and the Trouble With..., My Naughty Little Sister, Knight in Training, Murray and Bun, Toto the Ninja Cat, and Armadillo & Hare. Oh and the Jill Tomlinson animal books (The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark, etc).

We're currently reading the Dragons series (by Andy Shepherd) to him and he's reading the Minecraft Woodsword Chronicles by himself.

He enjoyed The Faraway Tree awhile ago so we were thinking about some of the easier Enid Blyton mysteries, like The Secret Seven. DD read those at about 7, I think!

David Walliams.
Yes I think he is a misogynistic creep.

Digdongdoo · 25/05/2025 09:47

Captain underpants etc, bunny vs monkey, Pamela Butchart, phoenix magazine, anything David Walliams, storey treehouse, Barry lover, Loki and he loves anything comic book style. Some of the Jacqueline Wilson books he likes too.
We found road Dahl, Enid blyton etc really dated and he just isn't interested.

GameOfJones · 25/05/2025 09:49

My 8 year old loves the Mr Gum books (they make me laugh a lot too), Dog Man comics and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Starlightstargazer · 25/05/2025 10:18

The children in my sons year 2 class are going wild for Beastquest books at the moment!

As above, Dog Man, Captain Underpants, 13 Storey Treehouse, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, the Beano.

All of these for mine. Plus the Tom Gates series.

houseofwater · 25/05/2025 11:04

Grimwood, beastie bros, spiderwick chronicals, the far away tree, varjack paw.

ellesbellesxxx · 25/05/2025 11:17

My son has just got into the 13 storey treehouse series and loves them… he usually prefers to read non fiction but he can’t get enough of these

nowandyesterday · 25/05/2025 11:21

Rabbit and bear, lives this collection.

Hannah Gold, she has a few books that he has self read and loved too

CornishDew · 25/05/2025 11:27

I have an 8yo DD but we love a good adventure book. The adventure train series by Sam Sedgman as co-author (best read in order) and his first solo book were brilliant. We’ve just finished the Max Einstein series of 4 books too which hit some very important topics plus a bit of science in a kid friendly way

General0rgana1 · 25/05/2025 12:04

Same as many PPs: Bunny vs Monkey & The Phoenix

But also all of Adam Kay’s books. He’s read Kay’s Marvellous Medicine so many times he’s practically memorised it word for word.

goldgoldd · 25/05/2025 20:17

Amazing thanks lots of suggestions! We’ve ordered dogman and goosebumps for now :)
